Dachsador Breed History

It is unknown where the Dachsador originated from. It is believed that the hybrid breed was developed as a result of designer dog trends that have appeared in the last two decades. The Dachsador was created by the combination of the Dachshund and the Labrador Retriever. In the 1400s, the Dachshund was developed in Germany. A great pack hunter, this breed excelled at hunting the badger. Their relatively good speed and even more so, their ability to enter dens of prey gave them their name, which when translated means "badger hound”. They were famous for their bravery when boar hunting as well. In the 1800s, they were more popular as a companion; they eventually made their way to the United States but were not sought after there because of their German ties. After World War II however, the Dachshund became an adored family pet. The exact origin of the Labrador Retriever is often theorized as having beginnings in Portugal before being introduced into Newfoundland. The history of the Labrador Retriever began to be documented in the 19th century when English aristocrats imported the dogs from Newfoundland. At the time, they were known as “St John’s” dogs who assisted fisherman by retrieving lines and lost fish. The breed’s strong work ethic became a big factor in families wanting to obtain one. The Labrador Retriever was ideal for hunting and was often used by hunters who brought them back from Canada. In 1865, the name Labrador Retriever officially stuck with the breed. Originally, the breed was black in color but after time, the colors spread out to include liver and yellow in the late 1800s. In 1917, the American Kennel Club officially recognized the breed.

Dachsador Breed Appearance

The Dachsador is a hybrid breed that was developed from the Dachshund and the Labrador Retriever. This breed does not have a standard and will vary depending on the litter. The breed has a dense, rough, wiry, and water-repellent coat that stems from the Dachshund’s traits. The Dachsador has a longer than tall body that is similar to the Dachshund. His small build is effective for herding. His eyes will usually be dark brown. His coat will range anywhere from chocolate brown to black, to yellow. His muzzle is pointy like the Dashshund while his ears are small and angled. His short, stubby legs stand parallel to his chest. His body is muscular and athletic. with a tail that appears to curl just a bit.

Dachsador Breed Maintenance

The Dachsador is not considered a hypoallergenic breed and will shed moderately. Brushing is recommended daily for 10 to 15 minutes with a rubber curry brush or a slicker brush which glides smoothly over the fur, yet draws out the loose hair. This hybrid may enjoy a swim now and then so be certain to check the ears regularly for excessive moisture. The teeth and nails are an important part of the maintenance routine; to avoid periodontal disease and loss of teeth, brush your Dachsador's teeth at least 3 times per week with a veterinary approved toothpaste. Trim the toenails as needed; typically this will be every few weeks.

Dachsador Temperament

The Dachsador has a sweet temperament and is eager to please his family. When he is not active, he is even-tempered and mild-mannered. This breed will yearn to cuddle with you and take a nap right on your lap. The Dachsador is a curious breed with much to offer his family. He is not known as a nuisance barker and will reserve barking for when necessary. This affectionate breed loves his family as well as young children. He will require early socialization though, in order to be accepting of other small animals and dogs. Training can prove to be a challenge as the Dachshund is known to be a stubborn breed. With time and patience, your lovable canine will learn the ways of the household. Motivate him with treats and encourage him to practice his training. This breed is generally welcoming of strangers and is often described as a friend to all.

Dachsador Activity Requirements

Your Dachsador will love to be on the go. He can fare well in most climates, though when nippy outside you may choose to give in a little extra warmth in the form of a sweater or coat. He'll want to be outside no matter what the weather but should not be left out in the cold. Eager to meet and greet, your Dachsador will enjoy at least two walks per day. Obedience classes will give him a chance to show off his smarts. Apartment living is possible as long as a lot of stair climbing is not needed; a house with a secure yard is ideal but as with all dogs, do not leave him unattended. Remember, he is a hunter and a digger at heart and may want to begin the chase if he sees something interesting.

He's been the best "first dog owner" experience I could have asked for. We rescued him at 6 months (no trauma, owner surrendered due to a new born & toddler in house). He and our 14 year old cat have gotten along since day one, and their bond grows every day. He can be stubborn, but he's a lover, and will do anything to please us. A true cuddler, he's always by my side when we're together.

I owned a dachsador, since she was 5 months, for 8 years before she passed away in November of 2017. She was the best dog i’ve ever encountered. She was always ready for an adventure or a snuggle on the couch She was very obedient and easy to train; eager to please as well. She was a funny looking dog and had a curly tail and stubby legs with a lab head. She was my velcro dog. Contrary to popular belief, she loved small rodents and cats, and did bark and howl a lot. She did shed a lot though but had excellet health. She was a bit shy when meeting people but very quickly warmed up. She was also very smart and emotionally responsive dog. As you can tell i miss her very much and think about her every day.

Mags is extremely affectionate with me and my husband. Our boys are identical twins (17 years old) she will play with them a little but I think they are a little to rough and she gets "intimidated very easily. Our older dog is a Cocker Spaniel (Peter Meissner). Outside they run very fast with each other and play like crazy. She never leaves Pete and if they get separated he will go get her for us. Sometimes inside I put them separate because Pete does not like constant closeness. He growled and snap at her once. He didn't bite her or touch her at all but she let out a scream so loud and and ran to me in terror. He was told that was not acceptable in this house. With his (brothers being very prone to fighting things out) I have a zero tolerance for any kind of physical solving of problems.

Sweet dog, 40 lb lap dog, loves his family (both human and canine), and welcomes friendly strangers into his home. Barks loudly at everything, loves to play with other dogs, chases small animals, and loves to play with toys. Very unsure of strangers outside of his home. Does it like small, unfamiliar children.

Lucy was found as a street dog in rural Dallas County raising a litter of pups. After a year with foster families, we chose each other. It was love and trust from the start. Lucy and I have been together 4 years. Lucy is the apartment complex greater when out on walks. She has never met someone she doesn't introduce herself to. Lucy has barked exactly 5 times in the 4 years we've been together. Lucy is a mild mannered companion who loves to sunbathe whether its 105 or 35 degrees outside. She sleeps with me every night.

I adopted Darla as a gsd/lab mix,we soon discovered no gsd traits in her at all. Searching the internet we came upon pics of doxadors, sure enough Darla looked just like them. Darla has transformed children extremely fearful of dogs into dog lovers. Her laid back, sensitive nature let them pet and snuggle her. Then children now own a rambunctious dog. Darla gets terribly carsick, slightly better with time, hope that camping this year might correct this more.

My 3 Daschsadors are turning 2yrs old in August. They are bonded sisters & never leave each others side. They are extremely hyper & very LOUD guard dogs & bark threateningly at EVERYTHING & they NEVER stop licking! They love to play but cant go to the dog park because they refuse to walk on a leash (& will lay down on their sides pretending to be dead! lbvs). They HATE baths, rain, water & cleanliness of any sort & love to dig, roll in the dirt & be as smelly as possible! They are a definite HANDFUL but are so loyal, loving & adorable! We love them dearly!

Our Lo Lo is a great dog! She has grown up with our 4 year old son, and they are the best of friends. She loves to roll around and wrestle with him on the trampoline! She has been very patient with him and never tried to bite anyone. The only problem we have with her is her barking at every living creature she sees, and she can spot a deer or squirrel a mile away. But overall, she’s wonderful and I would recommend one of her breeds to any family with children.

I love my little one. I originally got him as a stray dog around 2-3 years old and he was poorly treated and ran away from everyone. But such a sweet year when I got to know him. A lot of people in the neighborhood tried to catch him but he was a jokester and loved to be chased. One day because he lived in the woods behind my house, I noticed how starving he was and fed him since then he willing came into my home and I washed him and that was it. After a few months, we moved to New York and he is like a different dog now. At first he was wary with children but has learned to be kinder though it’s been tuff cus anyone who is scared of him he immediately fears back and barks and boy it’s a loud one that scared people! It took a while for him to get use to people especially the little ones. But 3 years later and I popped one of my own and thought he’s so mean with her he’s not sweetest either lol I think he’s just getting use to her since she is now one and a half. The only concern of this bread would be the health issues because since I took him in he’s had A LOT. I have had to get him to the vet because the usual medicine I would give him for heart worm was not strong enough and he was being eaten alive and almost died. Then he has a benign cyst in between him toe ( must of been there from before I has him) and wouldn’t heal with dissected so we had to cut off a toe (he still walks fine despite he is bo-legged too) and recently we figured out he has many allergies to mold, storage mites, ragweed and even cats! Which he has had two cats friends in his lifetime. So that’s interesting! Anyway, he is very good at learning but because of his masculinity he is very focused on mostly my boyfriend who I see he sees a Alfa and when he’s around doesn’t listen to me as much lol overall, this is just my experience and I hope you choose this dog for all the wonderful reasons otherwise. He’s so sweet and playful.

I've had Lana since she was 5 weeks old and here's our experience. 1. Health: be aware, the dog is about 35lbs on average and that's a lot of weight on a long spine. Choose your furniture height wisely as well as you don't want to have stairs in your home. Reverse sneezing and allergies are very common. 2.G She sheds a LOT. Even with regular brushing. Nails are very long even after clipping. 3. Super and I mean SUPER friendly. Will be a best friend to any stranger. If you get another puppy or a cat, she will raise it as her own. 4. Energy. High energy and always wants to play, however, will get tired in 20-30 minutes depending on the activity. 5. Trainability: VERY smart. I easily trained her to potty, to be non food and treats aggressive, to be non aggressive when her ears, teeth and everything else is touched. ALL kinds of cool tricks! She is stubborn though and a hunter, I was never able to trainer her walking without leash. Keep in mind, this dog gets depressed when home alone. It's best if you have kids or other dogs. This dog needs companionship all the time.

She is 4 yrs old. It’s been about two weeks and she eats every other day. She’s become withdrawn and doesn’t even want to play with her toys. Even a biscuit which was her favorite she doesn’t want. She has her own recliner she no longer sits on when she is called she retreats to her cage. She had a complete wellness and CBC test and all was okay. The Dr. Prescribed amoxicillin just in case. I’m thinking of finding a better food but for her type I don’t know what to choose. I’m lost and don’t know how to get her to engage.
