English Sprointer

Up until 1902, English Springer Spaniels and Cocker Spaniels were considered to be the same breed. The smaller of the dogs would be used for hunting woodcock, which led to the creation of their name. The larger ones were used to spring and hunt larger game. In the early 1900s these dogs were brought to Canada and the United States, and became known after the English Springer Spaniel Field Trial Association was created in 1924. The English Pointer is an old breed that has existed since partway throughout the 17th century. The actual country of origin is thought to be Spain, but England is often given credit for refining the breed. The ancestors are thought to include Spanish Pointers, the Greyhound, Foxhound and Bloodhound, the Bull Terrier and Spanish Setters. They were brought home to Britain by British army officers in the War of Spanish Succession. At around the same time, Italian Pointers were brought to England and bred with Spanish Pointers, therefore creating the English Pointer. These dogs were used in the field for hunting and pointing out hares. The hares would then be found and chased down by Greyhounds. Both of these dog breeds are quite different in looks but have the same energetic and loving personalities. When bred together, they created the sweet and wonderful hybrid English Sprointer breed.
