The English Sprointer is a new type of dog that was made by mixing an English Pointer and an English Springer Spaniel, and  is a sweet breed that makes a great family pet. Not very much is known about this breed since it was so recently created. However, by considering the characteristics of the parent dogs, we can determine that this designer breed should be an extremely friendly and smart pet. They are far too kind and social to be watch dogs, and can sometimes have trouble focusing when being trained, but are still great pets that are sure to brighten up your life.

English Sprointer Breed History

Up until 1902, English Springer Spaniels and Cocker Spaniels were considered to be the same breed. The smaller of the dogs would be used for hunting woodcock, which led to the creation of their name. The larger ones were used to spring and hunt larger game. In the early 1900s these dogs were brought to Canada and the United States, and became known after the English Springer Spaniel Field Trial Association was created in 1924. The English Pointer is an old breed that has existed since partway throughout the 17th century. The actual country of origin is thought to be Spain, but England is often given credit for refining the breed. The ancestors are thought to include Spanish Pointers, the Greyhound, Foxhound and Bloodhound, the Bull Terrier and Spanish Setters. They were brought home to Britain by British army officers in the War of Spanish Succession. At around the same time, Italian Pointers were brought to England and bred with Spanish Pointers, therefore creating the English Pointer. These dogs were used in the field for hunting and pointing out hares. The hares would then be found and chased down by Greyhounds. Both of these dog breeds are quite different in looks but have the same energetic and loving personalities. When bred together, they created the sweet and wonderful hybrid English Sprointer breed.

English Sprointer Breed Appearance

This hybrid breed is sleek and has a long tail, unless they are docked. They usually take on the coat from the English Pointer parent. These dogs will take on more specific characteristics from the English Springer Spaniel and the English Pointer. English Springer Spaniels are medium in size and have compact body types. Their toplines of the skull and the muzzle should be parallel. They have long ears and teeth that meet in a scissors bite. Their heads are big but proportionate to the body. Their neck and heads are about the same in length, and they have moderate stops. In most cases the tail is docked, and will be carried horizontally or slightly upright. English Pointers are agile and compact with noble heads that they carry proudly. They have muscular bodies and noses that sit high on their head and the muzzles that have defined stops. Their pendant shaped ears are pointed slightly, and the necks are long and straight. The tails are tapering.

English Sprointer Breed Maintenance

The best way to brush these dogs is to use a curry brush. If these dogs have the coat of an English Springer Spaniel, they will need to be brushed about 3 times per week. Some people choose to trim the fur around the head, ears, feet, neck and tail. They should be trimmed every six to eight weeks, which can be done by a professional groomer who can give them baths as well. English Pointers are also low maintenance, and should be brushed about once per week. They will only need to be bathed three or four times throughout the year. Aside from coat maintenance, these dogs will need to have their teeth brushed. This should be done about two or three times per week minimum, unless it can be done every day. They also need their nails trimmed about every month or two, and their ears cleaned weekly.

English Sprointer Temperament

English Sprointers are friendly but can be suspicious of strangers. They make great family pets and are very loyal. A more accurate description of the designer breed’s personality can be determined by looking at those of the parent breeds. The English Springer Spaniel is a happy breed with lots of energy. These dogs love playing with anyone in the family, including children. This breed can be good watch dogs that will alert you of any visitors, but they are way too friendly to be protective guard dogs. They are well behaved around most pets but since they were bred to hunt birds, they should be monitored around them. English Pointers are sweet and gentle pets who are also too friendly around strangers to be effective watch dogs. They do great around active families. Both parents can be difficult to train as they can easily lose focus.

English Sprointer Activity Requirements

These dogs are very active and should be exercised at least 60 to 120 minutes per day. They are great pets for active family members. English Springer Spaniels can be hard to live with if not given enough exercise. English Pointers as well are very active and need lots of exercise. They mainly enjoy hunting, but will also love to be enrolled in agility or tracking activities. This breed can develop anxiety and bad behaviors if not exercised enough. Your English Sprointer will thrive on a busy, outdoor lifestyle.

Cali joined our family in June as a 4 month old. At first she was very timid and shy as we’d just taken her away from her sister and made sure we were trustworthy before she felt fully comfortable with us. She’s a loyal companion to her owners and loves making new friends in dogs and kids, but warms up to new people in her own time which is basically a couple of minutes and can be a bit skeptical if men… - so we definitely agreed with the article referring to the breed as too friendly around strangers to be guard dogs. She loves playing rough and is a pro at fetch. She struggles with commands when out on walks as she’s easily distracted by her surroundings and very enthusiastic about following scents! We’re working on recall and control when she’s distracted by other dogs but it can be hit and miss. She had never been interested in cuddles and has always loved her own space but since coming into her first season she has really warmed up to snuggling and getting cozy on the couch at night. All in all Sprointers are incredible pets! They are great with all family members, love making new friends with all dogs, are easy to clean up after, have great appetites, we couldn’t have asked for a better pup to bring home!

We’ve had our little boy Ollie for 2 months now and he is a little star. He’s so loving and very tolerant of my son (I have a 4 year old autistic son) he’ll pull his tail and follow him round and Ollie doesn’t bat an eye lid. He learned to sit and give paw, lay down and wait within a few days and will now do this on command every time. He walks lovely on and off the lead and rarely runs off. I have found the breed to be exceptionally clever. I’ve previously had an English springer spaniel who past when she was 15, she took months to accomplish what Ollie has accomplished in days. I would recommend this breed to anyone.

Bisto is a rescue dog that we fell in love with instantly. He came from Serbia via Romania to the UK. He is great with the kids and loves a fuss. He loves nothing more than to be out for his walks. Unfortunately, he is undergoing Chemo at the moment as we discovered he had cancer shortly after homing him. Bisto is a double rescue dog :) He is responding well to treatment and hopes to be cancer free early 2018! Bisto is the best dog in the world and we love him.

Max passed away at 17 yrs 6 months. A brilliant dog, that is both loyal and intelligent. Needs long walks and plenty of exercise. Prone to hip issues in later life that is treatable. Would recommend a Sprointer to anyone.
