Description

Carr Creek State Park is located in Sassafras, KY, in the southeast portion of the state. The small campground only offers 39 sites, but each has standard water and electric hookups, plus easy waterfront access.

This historic park is known as the home to some of the area’s very first settlers, in the 1770s. The county was not officially formed until 1884, though the area was recorded as early as 1751. Even then, settlers and explorers recognized the area’s value as a coal- and timber-producing region. The forests and streams were also home to Cherokee and Shawnee Native Americans, hunting the forests which have a marsh-like ecosystem unusual for Kentucky.

The park's Carr Fork, a tributary of the Kentucky River, provides boating, fishing, and swimming, plus the unique environment offers lots of wildlife watching opportunities. You’ll spot heron, wild turkeys, raccoons, and maybe even a skunk or two, as well as a wide representation of Kentucky’s native flora.

The Carr Fork Lake features the longest sand beach in the Kentucky State Parks system, set upon the 750 lake acres - perfect for boating and fishing for bass and walleye. A marina with a dock and bait store are just down the road, with separate parking available.

Amenities and activities found at the park include various administrative business services, an amphitheater, restrooms and showers, biking, canoeing, boating, fishing, fire rings, horseshoe pits, laundry facilities, picnic facilities, a retail shop, and hiking. Within 10 miles, you’ll additionally find a hunting zone.

Dogs are permitted, but must never be considered “running at large” and a proper, valid rabies tag and identification for the dog is required. To be safe, bring a standard, six-foot leash for your dog and keep them contained and near you at all times. Do not allow them to annoy other campers or approach campers unless invited, or wildlife at all.

Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.
