Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge Cabins

Kodiak means "island of the bears". Located 252 miles southwest of Anchorage, this land of the bears is a refuge for man and beast. The mountainous area is a paradise for the outdoors-person. The area is known for bears,  but also for fishing and other game, such as elk. 

While many visit the refuge on guided tours, there are seven locations across the refuge in which you may rent a cabin. These locations include Blue Fox Bay Cabin, Deadman Bay Cabin, North Frazer Lake Cabin, South Frazer Lake Cabin, Uganik Island Cabin, Uganik Lake Cabin, and Videkoda Bay. 

All cabins are primitive. There is no electricity or running water. You will need to either boil your water or bring a water purification kit with you for safe drinking water during your stay. There is no stove nor are there utensils for cooking. Bring a lantern or a flashlight as there is no lighting. The toilet is an outdoor open pit. 

You must store your meat in a meat cache. There are bears in the area so it will be critical that you are careful with your storage of food and waste. Most of the cabins have a Nordic stove for heat and you must provide the fuel. You can burn kerosene, home heating oil, or automotive diesel. Never bury your garbage. You must haul out all of your waste. 

The Kodiak weather is described as cool, wet, and variable. Prepare to bring the proper clothing and waterproof gear to prevent hypothermia.  The cabins are so isolated that you will have to use a plane or boat to access them. 

As such, prepare to stay longer than you intended should weather conditions be such that the planes are not able to fly. If you are a hunter, check the recreation.gov website for the best seasons for the fish or game you prefer to hunt. Savor the solitude, beauty, and wonders of this beautiful country.
