Description

Journey with your four-legged pal to a place that is rich both in beauty and history. Iowa's Lacey-Keosauqua State Park lets you experience Great Depression-era architecture, early settlements, and sacred Native American burial mounds. While here, take some time out of your vacation to ponder at the thousands of years' worth of visitors before you as you look out at the sights of the same impressive river they all did so many years ago.

For those who wish to camp here, there are 56 campsites, with varying hookup options available at many of the lots. If you like a little more structure around you when you camp, the park also offers 6 cabins up for rent -- and five of them are pup-friendly! You don't have to book ahead to stay at the grounds, as they keep about a third of their sites up for grabs for walk-in visitors. Fees to stay here start at $6 per night for a basic campsite during the off-season and go all the way up to $19 for a full-hookup site during the months of May through September. Cabins go for $50 per night, with weekly rates of $300.

When you're not filling up on local history, you'll probably find yourself in or around Lake Sugema. Though not actually in the park, the lake is almost within walking distance from the campground and is the destination of choice for many of the campers. It makes for a great place to swim or paddle, but boats must travel at slow speeds, with the use of electric motors only. Right in the park is the Des Moines River, which is a prime spot for fishing in addition to being easy on the eyes. All along the shores of this river, there are ample trails where you and your beloved fur-baby can explore the historical landmarks hidden throughout the area.

As with most Iowa parks, while your pupper is allowed to stay with you at your site, they are not allowed to follow you into designated swim areas. Also, you must keep them leashed throughout your stay and pick up all waste that they leave behind.

For a trip to one of Iowa's oldest state parks, add Lacey-Keosauqua State Park to your destination list!
