Description

If your pup wants to connect with Mother Nature, escape to the beautiful Bankhead National Forest. This woofderful slice of nature is one of Alabama’s four National Forests. It covers over 180,000 acres of land and is home to six recreation areas. Needless to say, your doggo will have plenty to discover when they visit!

Bankhead National Forest is an outdoor lover’s dream! One of the most pupular areas in the forest is Sipsey Wilderness. Layers of limestone and sandstone combine with streams and rivers to make dozens of pawsome waterfalls. In fact, the area is fondly known as the “Land of 1,000 Waterfalls.”  There are a several official trails that weave through the wilderness area that range from just under two miles all the way up to seven miles. Choose a hike that best suits your pup’s abilities and start exploring!

Furrific hiking can also be found in other areas of the forest with major trailheads located in each of the recreation areas. Please note there are a few types of poisonous snakes that live in the forest. Help protect your pup by keeping them on the trail at all times. Also, keep your eyes peeled for Poison Ivy and Poison Oak. And when you get home, search your doggo for ticks.

If you want to stay a night or two in Bankhead National Forest, settle in at one of the campgrounds. There are five different campgrounds to choose from. Clear Creek Recreation Area and Corinth Recreation Area can accommodate RVs. Brushy Lake Recreation Area, McDougle Camp, and Wolf Pen Hunters Camp have tent sites. Your pooch will love ruffing it and sleeping in the great outdoors!

While dogs are allowed on hiking trails and roads, and in developed areas such as campgrounds and picnic areas, they are not allowed in any swimming areas. Be sure your dog has a collar with a current license tag, and stays on a leash no longer than six feet at all times. Don’t forget to pack plenty of water so you and your pooch can both stay hydrated. Always have clean-up bags on hand too and practice leave no trace principles in this serene pupperdise.

Make no mistake, your doggo will love spending time in Bankhead National Forest!

Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.
