Caddo Lake State Park

Looking for a quiet outdoor retreat in East Texas? Then look no further than Caddo Lake State Park! Nestled on the bank of Big Cypress Bayou, this 500-acre gem draws nature lovers with its diverse habitats and recreational activities. Paddle along waterways, hit the trails, or enjoy a picnic in the woods—there's something for everyone here, including four-legged family members!

Hop into a canoe or kayak with your intrepid canine companion and explore Caddo Lake's maze of bayous, ponds, and sloughs. Don't miss the chance to see the bald cypress trees covered with Spanish moss up close—you won't find anything like this anywhere else in Texas! If you're feeling extra adventurous, there are over 50 miles of paddling trails in the area. Bring your own boat or rent one from park headquarters, and remember to strap on your life jackets before you set off! Note that if you'd prefer to just get a splash in from the shore, dogs are prohibited in designated swim areas and in the water. 

Puppers who prefer to stay on land can explore the park by following the approximately 2 miles of hiking trails that meander through the site. For a short and easy stroll, check out the 0.2-mile Pine Ridge Spur, a connector trail that will lead you and your pooch through an upland pine forest. If you and Fido are up for a more challenging hike, hit the 0.7-mile Pine Ridge Loop, which runs through a lesser-known part of the park. Note that some portions of this trail are steep.

If you need a place to stay for a couple of days, Caddo Lake offers several campsites and historic cabins for overnight visitors. Canine guests are not allowed inside the cabins, however, so you and your pup will have to ruff it. Campsites range from water only to full hookup, and each one comes with a picnic table, fire ring, and grill.

Whether you stay for a day or a weekend, keep your pup on a leash wherever you wander in the park. Alligators live in this furbulous area, so be on the lookout! Have water on hand to share, and clean-up bags, and always stoop and scoop.
