Fort Ridgely State Park
The Fort Ridgely State Park encompasses a total area of 220 acres of land that is situated six miles south of Fairfax off State Highway 4. The park is also on the Minnesota River just south of Fairfax. The park was established in 1934 to preserve Fort Ridgely which was the site of the Battle of Fort Ridgely throughout the Dakota War of 1862. Today, it provides a pawtastic green space to explore with your adventurous pup!
There are several features that make this park a unique place to visit. First, the park has historical significance as an outpost and a fort that played a pivotal role in the US-Dakota Conflict of 1862. The fort was built in 1855 and was actively used until 1872. Additionally, the park also has an old farmhouse that has been recently renovated and is now available for use as a rental cabin. Furthermore, you will find several buildings in the park that were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) between 1934 and 1936. These buildings were added on the National Register of Historic Places on October 25, 1989.
Besides these historical attractions, the park is also a favorite among visitors that love to participate in recreational activities like camping, stream fishing, bicycling, snow sledding, horseback riding, hiking, golfing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing. Some of the amenities in the park include interpretive exhibits, flush toilets, drive-in campsites, three walk-in campsites, picnic shelters, a picnic area, volleyball court, a playground, visitor center, nine-hole golf course, horseshoe pits, warming house, 11 miles of woofderful hiking trails, another 10 miles of horse trails, a paved bike trail, and even snowmobile and ski trails!
Dogs are certainly allowed into Fort Ridgely State Park, but do need to stay on a leash that is no longer than six feet long. Additionally, you are responsible to pick up any waste left behind to keep this pawsome park in pristine condition!
