Description

The John Boyd Thacher State Park is truly one of the Empire State’s most puptacular parks, and is home to the Helderberg Escarpment, a massive rock formation that has one of the highest yields of fossils in the world. That’s woofin’ impressive! While at this park, your pup will not only get to spend time in nature, they’ll also get to see some of New York’s geological past up close.

The hiking in John Boyd Thacher State Park is second to none. As you and your pup explore the network of trails, you’ll be treated to massive limestone cliff faces, dense woodland scenes, and occasional open plains.  You’ll also enjoy views of the Hudson Valley and Mohawk Valleys, and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. One of the most pupular hikes in the park is the mile long Indian Ladder Trail, and it’s easy to see why. A staircase leads down the side of the escarpment where you get to check out all the nooks and crannies of the cliffs and pass by Minelot Falls. Escarpment Trail is also worth checking out. Clocking in at 2.3 miles, it leads you along the edge of the Helderberg Escarpment from Hailes Cave to Glen Cove.

John Boyd Thacher State Park hosts frequent rock climbing events due to the towering cliffs that line the entire southern edge of the region. This furrific place also has ball fields, volleyball courts, and a playground. Plus, picnic areas are scattered throughout the park. If your pal wants to stay the night, bring a tent and grab a spot in the Thompson Lake Campground. Sites are available for tents and RVs.

Note that the Nature Center is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and the Visitors Center is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Dogs are not allowed inside any park buildings.

Don’t forget to carry some clean up bags and pick up after your fur baby. And before beginning your hike, make sure your water bottles are filled to the brim. No bones about it, this park will definitely make your pup’s tail wag!

Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.
