Judge C.R. Magney State Park

Nestled on the shore of Lake Superior, Judge C.R. Magney State Park encompasses a total area of 4,643 acres. From billion year old bedrock to the swift whitewater rapids, this park has several attractions that make it an exceptional and intriguing place that your pooch will absolutely love.

When visiting Judge C.R. Magney State Park, a hike to Devil’s Kettle Trail is a must. This infamous hike follows the Brule River, then drops down 175 steps and passes Upper Falls before it arrives at Devil’s Kettle Falls. This is not a normal waterfall. A massive volcanic rock splits the river into two then one half drops 50 feet into a pool and the other half plunges into a pothole. This impressive sight will thrill your pooch to their very core! It’s a two mile round trip, but plan on spending some extra time soaking in the puptacular scenery.

A wide range of creatures calls this park home. While out and about in the park, keep your eyes open for black bears, white-tailed deer, moose, and timber wolves. There are also plenty of smaller animals like red squirrels, woodchucks, snowshoe hares, and chipmunks. As for feathered friends, expect to see chickadees, jays, nuthatches, and woodpeckers. Needless to say, your pup will be busy keeping track of all these critters!

If your pooch isn’t ready to go home after just one day, stay the night in the park’s campground. Grab one of the 27 sites and settle in for a campfire and night under the stars. Hot showers and modern restrooms are available from mid-May to October. Be sure to have water and clean-up bags on hand. If you and your pup are just day trippers, bring some lunch along and enjoy an outdoor meal at the park’s pawsome picnic areas. One of them is located right next to the river. It doesn’t get much better than that!
