Description

People from all over the Tacoma region flock to Point Defiance Park when they are looking to escape the city and admire the breathtaking, natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. The naturally occurring peninsula hosts zoos, gardens, museums, beaches, bluffs, and an off-leash dog play area that draw in tourists and residents alike.

With seven acres of off-leash fun, Point Defiance Park offers the most exciting dog play area in all of Pierce County. Most of the park is unfenced and delineated by naturally occurring barriers. Within the 7-acre park, large dogs are separated from smaller dogs by a small, fenced enclosure that allows small dogs and their owners to play without worry.

Many opt to take their dogs on a leashed walk around Fort Nisqually before letting them run around off-leash in the designated park area. Shaded cabanas offer a picnic area for visiting families and dog owners, and there are rainwater containers from which dogs can drink. You will want to bring water for yourself, and there are restrooms in the area, just not right inside the dog park.

Metro Parks Tacoma manages Point Defiance Park, and the dog park is free for visitors to use. Dogs can go anywhere in Point Defiance Park outside of the off-leash area provided that they are on a leash, except for the zoo and aquarium, in which dogs are not allowed. Make sure you either use the poop bags provided in the off-leash area, or you have some on your person if you go walking outside of the dog park.

You are sure to encounter friendly, helpful dog owners, as the park is incredibly popular, so bring your best social game and make sure that your dog is ready and willing to socialize with others, too! If you are looking for stunning views, convenient facilities, and a place to take your dog that you can enjoy as well, then come and check out Point Defiance Park’s off-leash dog play area!

Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.
