Vettiner Dog Run (at Louisville Metro Park)

The Vettiner Dog Run is a special, cordoned off section of the Vettiner Park in the city of Louisville, Kentucky that boasts a spacious, two-acre field which is in use as an off-leash dog park. It has two separate sections. One for all dogs and another which is reserved exclusively for small dogs weighing up to thirty pounds. This does not include puppies who are required to be at least four months of age before using the facility.

All sections are securely fenced with shoulder-high chain-link fencing. The dog park is surfaced with a combination of tarmac, dirt, and grass throughout which trees have been planted. There are also trees and bushes around the perimeter of the dog park. 

The park is completely outdoor and open to the elements, though some shade from the sun is provided by the shrubbery. There are several park benches for pet owners and a small summer house. Water fountains have been installed, but pet owners need to take their own poop bags and leave dog feces in the containers provided.

The Vettiner Dog Run is not a free to use dog park. It's necessary to pre-purchase a permit before taking your dog there. There is an annual charge of $35 for one dog which then reduces for each extra subsequent dog. If you have more than one dog to bring to the park, it is $25 for the second, $15 for the third, and $10 each for any more. 

These are organized by the Louisville Dog Run Association (LDRA) who require evidence of up to date vaccinations before issuing the permits. A Rabies tag and the permit must be worn by the dog at all times when in the park. For visitors to the area who wish to exercise their dogs in the park, day permits are available, but it's necessary to contact the LDRA in advance via their website.
