Description

Tucked away on the outskirts of South Lake Tahoe, the Washoe Meadows State Park is the pawfect spot to go for a quiet walk with your pupper. This 620-acre site is completely undeveloped, allowing you and Fido to enjoy the natural beauty of the Sierra Nevada.

Named for the Native American tribe that has lived in the area for thousands of years, the Washoe Meadows State Park is nestled in a valley at the base of Echo Summit, with the Angora Creek and Upper Truckee River flowing through it. You and your pooch can hike through the meadows and woodlands during the warmer months, and snowshoe your way around the park when snow covers the ground. Washoe Meadows is one of the least known parks in the Sierra State Parks system, so you and Fido will be able to explore the site without any distractions.

The hiking trail, which spans about 3 miles, is pretty straightforward and should be no problem at all for active doggos. It is not waymarked, but since it is a meadow, it's not difficult to see where you're headed or where you came from. Mount Tallac, Angora Peak, Freel Peak, and Twin Peaks will also be in sight.

The park is home to several wildlife species, so you won't exactly be alone during your hike. Some of the animals that you might encounter include the black bear, pine marten, coyote, northern goshawk, and long-eared owl. Various native species of wildflowers can also be found growing and adding pops of color to the area.

Though you probably won't bump into another hiker while you're there, always keep your pup on a leash and clean up after them. Note that the lower portions of the trail may be submerged in water during the wet months, so keep a towel in the car to wipe off Fido's paws before you head home. Carry water and clean up bags too!

Spend a couple of hours away from it all with your best friend by your side at the Washoe Meadows State Park!
