Forest Park Conservancy Trails

Dog-friendly Forest Park in Portland is thought to be the largest urban park in the nation at about 5200 acres, with mostly rainforest conditions. It also boasts 80 miles of trails, many short "connector" trails under a mile, the longest being 30 miles, with over 48 trails total. Some are designated as multi-use that allow bicycles and/or horses, but the majority are for 2- and 4-footed pedestrians only. They range from fire roads to a paved footpath across the St. Johns Bridge on the Willamette River. 

The longest trail in Forest Park is the Wildwood Trail, a point-to-point route which serves as a backbone of sorts with many short trails leading to it. Its 30 mile route begins at the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial at Washington Park, from which it travels north to its terminus on Newberry Road. Although it begins in another park, it spends 27 of its 30 miles in Forest Park. Because every other trail in the park connects with the Wildwood at some point, this could be called the most pupular. Its route's maximum elevation change is 2772 feet.

Another well-used trail is the Ridge Trail, at 2.8 miles with an elevation of about 900 feet. This out-and-back path is moderately trafficked and features gorgeous wildflowers and a furtastic view of the St. John's Bridge. The "out" part of the trail is a steep descent to the river, while the "back" section is a rugged climb back up on the sometimes slippery and muddy clay. Other puptacular views on this trail include Mount St Helens and Mount Adams. The trailhead is at NW Bridge Avenue.

The 3.3-mile Waterline out-and-back trail is a lightly trafficked route pawrfect for folks and their fur-babies who are looking for a little more solitude and quiet than the more pupular trails. It features furbulous forest views, including trees frosted with thick green moss and many species of birds and mammals, including owls. Salamanders also live in the wetter areas of the trail. Wildflowers brighten up the mostly green, lush environment surrounding you.

With 45 more trails to explore, Forest Park promises an outdoor adventure unlike most urban parks offer. Its wilderness feel, close to transportation and all that a city provides is a unique and woofderful experience!
