Granite Mountain
The Granite Mountain Trail is just waiting to bring you and your beloved barker on a magnificent mountain adventure you will never furget! The Granite Mountain wilderness resembles something straight out of your favorite fairy tale, and although it is nestled right beside the booming city of Prescott, this fantastical forest of pines and oak is a secluded haven for flora, fauna, and nature fanatics. There are a total of fifteen trails to be found in this ravishing recreation area, but only the Granite Mountain Trail braves the summit.
When you leave the trailhead and set off on this puptastic path, the first thing you'll see is the breathtaking mountain up ahead. While this may seem daunting from the bottom, don't let it put you off, because most of this trail maintains a relatively flat track with gentle sloping. By the time you reach the steeper sections, you and your furever friend will be bursting with energy and eager to see more of this stunning landscape!
You'll begin your ascent on sunny south-facing slopes that lead to a series of switchbacks dotted with chaparral and juniper. Here, the track is lined with mighty boulders of all shapes and sizes. You'll then begin to notice some changes in the landscape as you climb into the thick forest of ponderosa pine and pinyon-juniper. There is an abundance of vistas along the trail that provide unforgettable views of this stunning spot. The incredible sights at the summit are even better than you can imagine, and the view of the sparkling blue lake below, the Bradshaw Mountains to the south, and the Granite Dells to the northeast of Prescott will take your breath away!
Although this trail is popular, it is rarely crowded and can be completed at your own leisurely pace. There is plenty of parking at the trailhead, and restrooms too, but bring water for you and your happy hound. Remember to pack poop bags and always clean up after Fido. Don't forget to keep your eyes peeled while you walk; you might be lucky enough to spot a peregrine falcon! There's just no bones about it -- this trail is unmissable!
