Description

Hoodoo Trail in Red Canyon is a must-see if you're in the area. It's an easy hike for just about any one. The entire loop comes in at under half a mile! Get a taste of hiking in the area and see if you and your dog are up for more adventures!

People flock to Hoodoo Trail because it's the shortest, easiest path in the area that still has some high quality hoodoos. While the name may conjure up vague ideas about witchcraft or voodoo, the answer is much plainer. Hoodoo is simply the common name given to rock spires that have a variable thickness. Unlike regular spires, which form a smooth cone from the ground to their tip, hoodoos are "lumpy" looking, more like a totem pole than a cone.

Stop at the Red Canyon Visitor's Center. There you can grab a map of the area, use the restrooms, or relax for a bite to eat outside. Then head west to the trailhead for the short, but beautiful Hoodoo Trail. A little over halfway through the hike, you'll have approached the base of a Hoodoo, and there's a second one just a little further on! It's rare to be able to get so close to the base of them, as they typically form along broken, uneven ground.

The Hoodoo Trail itself is about two feet wide, and made of well packed dirt. You should be able to follow it without a problem. Even if the way was tricky, you could easily find your way back due to the traffic on the trail! This path is highly popular, so keep a firm grip on your pup's leash. You'll probably have to share the road once or twice on your walk!

The Red Canyon Hoodoo Trail lets you get up close and personal with these rare and gorgeous rock formations, and your dog can sniff out the way!

Cautions & Considerations
The hot sun is your enemy on a Utah hike, even a short one! Pack water for yourself and your dog, and be sure to give both of you opportunities to drink along your way. Prevention is better for dehydration than a cure.
