Description

The Washburn Discovery Trail is a 2.2-mile section of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, and you'll find it in Washburn, North Dakota. You can begin your hike at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center where there is lots of free parking. If you plan on visiting the interpretive center, you'll have to pay an admission fee (children get in free), and your dog won't be able to join you. If you'd just like to use the Washburn Discovery Trail, your dog is welcome to join you if they remain on a leash.

Your journey will begin at Harmony Park, and you'll follow the concrete path to Riverside Park. This Washburn park is a scenic area where you'll get to experience the vistas of the Missouri River. As you continue on, you'll see several exciting spots where you'll want to stop and read the interpretive signs. Among the many interesting features of the path are North Dakota's first coal-fired power plant, Washburn Landing, and sections of the Soo Line Railroad. The Washburn Discovery Trail will also take you past the Sioux Ferry, a historical boat that is the last operating ferry boat on the river in North Dakota.

The trail's concrete surface and wide path mean it's wheelchair-accessible and convenient for pushing strollers. During the winter, you'll often see cross-country skiers on the trail. The Washburn Discovery Trail is not only pawpular with dog walkers, but you'll spot skaters, cyclists, and joggers on the path as well. Specific points on the trail give visitors river access where you can stop for fishing and boating. Bird-watchers will also find some good scouting locations along the trail, and you'll see picnic areas and campsites, too.

There are seating areas and waste disposal stations on the trail, but bring your own doggie bags and drinking water to ensure you and your pooch have a pawesome time!

Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.
