Description

The South Winom Creek Trail in Umatilla National Forest is a four-mile natural surface trail that follows the water's course. In this designated wilderness area, you'll hike through heavy timbers, rolling benchland, and some grassy flats. Along the way, stay alert for wildlife like Rocky Mountain elk, blue grouse, and ruffed grouse. The streams and creeks out here offer puptastic fishing.

To get to the trailhead for this pathway, head to the Forest Service spur for Road 52-440. You'll pass the Winom Creek Campground and go across the water. Take the south trail by the creek to head into the North Fork John Day Wilderness. Hike along the edge of Winom Butte on the way to the route's endpoint at Big Creek Trail. Out here, you might find signs of an old gold or silver mine, like dredge ditches and trash dumps. If you pack a fishing rod, see if you can catch some rainbow trout, steelhead, and Chinook salmon for dinner. You can also forage for wild mushrooms and huckleberries out in the area.

Bring your furry pal with you out here as long as they're secure on a lead or cord. Although this is a remote area, the trail is open to equestrians and backpackers. Yield to the right side of the path when others want to pass you. The campsite doesn't have potable water, so bring some with you when you come here. Pack some bags to remove and carry out any waste your pup deposits.

Hike in the wilderness with your canine companion on the South Winom Creek Trail. This dirt trek will take you over an undulating course in some wild country. Enjoy the peaceful surroundings and pawesome scenery out here. After your trip, head back to the trailhead and have a picnic with your four-footed pal at one of the tables near the campsite.

Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.
