Bagle Hounds are a mix between a Basset Hound and a Beagle. Bagle Hounds strike the perfect balance between their two parents, both of the hound family. A Bagle Hound's appearance differs from dog to dog, but generally they look like Basset Hounds with longer legs and shorter bodies. Like Beagles and Basset Hounds, Bagle Hounds have short coats. When it comes to energy levels, Bagle Hounds falls somewhere between their parents. As Beagles are high energy and Basset Hounds are low energy, Bagle Hounds tend to have fairly average amounts of energy.

Bagle Hound Breed History

Bagle Hounds are a hybrid of two hound dogs, the Basset Hound and the Beagle. The history of the Bagle Hound is short, but both parent breeds have long histories as hunting companions in Europe. The Basset Hound where first mentioned in the 1500s in France, where the breed was developed as a scent hound for trailing rabbit and hare. The French word bas is said to be the original descriptor for the Basset Hound, which means "low".

The Beagle pre-dates the Basset Hound by approximately 200 years. They were also developed as scent hounds in England. Of slighter yet taller than the Basset Hound, these two hound dogs mix together to produce an excellent mid-sized scent hound.

There is not much documentation on Bagle Hounds, but most pet parents adopt them as companions rather as hunting dogs. Today, this sweet, even-tempered hybrid is recognized by several associations, including the American Canine Hybrid Club, the Designer Breed Registry, the Designer Dogs Kennel Club, the Dog Registry of America, and the International Design Canine Registry. This recognition shows the popularity of this hound dog hybrid.

Bagle Hound Breed Appearance

Bagle Hounds are hybrids between Basset Hounds and Beagles. Your Bagle Hound will develop characteristics from breeds, making it sometimes difficult to distiguish between your Bagle Hound and their parents. This is because Basset Hounds and the Beagles are both of the hound family, making them very similar.

For one, Basset Hounds are low to the ground, while Beagles are leaner with longer legs. Often, these traits cancel each other out, making Bagle Hounds more proportionate than either of their parents. Bagle Hounds tend to have square heads and big ears that hang low. The lips on a Bagle Hound will not be as tight as the Beagle but will not droop like the Basset Hound either. Bagle Hounds tend to have big, expressive eyes that look sad and kind, the definition of "puppy dog eyes". Their eyes are usually dark brown or hazel.

Bagle Hound Breed Maintenance

Bagle Hounds are are known to shed despite their short coat. A hound brush or mitt will help remove dead or loose hair from the coat and promote new hair growth. Bagle Hounds require brushing once a week will keep their coat healthy. Bagle Hounds may develop a doggy smell, but you can avoid this with frequent brushing.

Grooming your Bagle Hound will help evenly distribute the natural oils produced by their skin. The occasional bath is fine but frequent baths are not recommended as this may strip natural oils from their coat, causing https://wagwalking.com/condition/contact-dermatitis. Basset Hounds are known to drool, meaning your Bagle Hound will drool occasionally. Drooling may be a sign of exhaustion, thirst, or hunger. Bagle Hounds are prone to developing ear infections due to their long ears. Remove any dirt, debris, or wax from your Bagle Hound's ears while grooming to help them stay healthy.

Bagle Hound Activity Requirements

Bagle Hounds have good temperaments and average energy levels thanks to their parents. Beagles, known for their mischievous and sometimes rambunctious behaviors are a lot of fun but can be a handful to manage. Meanwhile, Basset Hounds are generally considered to be lazy plodding along and stepping on its long floppy ears.

Mixing a Beagle and Basset Hound makes an excellent family pet that loves kids and is friendly to strangers. Both Beagles and Basset Hounds love to be around their family and are considered pack-minded. Bagle Hounds may bay, bark, or become depressed if left without companionship for long periods.

Bagle Hounds do well with other dogs, and will even tolerate a cat. Basset Hounds and Beagles are smart dogs yet a little stubborn, so your Bagle Hound may be slightly more difficult to train. However, they should pick up new tricks quickly when in the mood. Many owners resort to food-based rewards when training,. If you happen to use treats when training, take caution as Bagle Hounds put on weight quickly.

Indy Jo is my Emotional Support Animal as we rescued her during the pandemic; we almost named her ESA. Indy Jo's rescuing is the BEST DECISION EVER as she brings so much JOY to our family of 8. She loves to play zoomie-zoomie (runs through the house at 9 million miles an hour jumping on/off the sofa and enjoying life), fetch and tug of war. FOOD is her passion in life; she LOVES her kibbles, but especially LOVES treats and chewing on nyla bones! She is very intelligent and caught on to training very quickly. If she hears a bag of anything opening she automatically sits, leans her head and is ready to "shake" in order to get rewarded. She also LOVES "bubber rellies" (belly rubs), ear massages and under chin scratches. By far one of the BEST pups we've shared our lives with; she LOVES all of our kiddos and tolerates our other furry friend, another rescue named Mildred Stiltz "Millie Stiltz", a GSP mix.

Sadly I am posting this experience about ten years later. I had Guinea for 16 years 16 wonderful years. He has passed away in 2013. I had him since he was 6 months old when my step mom couldn't handle his lack of going potty outside. When we had got him we had no trouble potty-training him. He did some things that would make you mad at the time but laugh later on. Once when he was about 5 years old my sister had ordered pizza. She left the box on the table as we needed to go pick up her kids and when we came back he had gotten onto the table and ate a hole in the box and the pizza was gone. Another time when he was 12 years old my brother was grilling porkchops outside and he left them on a plate on the grill tray thing. There was a towel underneath that was dangling and my dog just pulled on that towel and down came the food. It took awhile for my brother to forgive him. Also, he doesn't like baths and I usually end up having to carry him upstairs (Once he is in the bath he is fine) This one day I put his leash on him to take him for a walk. Well, normally we go out the back except this time I wanted to go out the front and as we walked towards the foyer he stopped and tried to escape. I laughed when I realized this is the way up to the bathroom. He thought I was going to give him a bath and was like nope. It took me letting go of the leash and going to the front door for him to realize it was not bath time but walkies time and he came running over to me :). Now we laugh about those times. I miss him bunches. I will one day get another doggie but there will never be another like him.

This is the best dog I have ever had. Vary pack minded and doesn't even like being left alone in a room. Extreamly smart and mine was so easy to train. Loves exploring and sniffing out new things. Mine will keep his nose out the window on drives and is just taking in all the smells. Mine has done amazing with the other cats and dogs in the house. I doubt I would want another breed honestly after having my Zero. He is just amazing.

We found bear wandering on the interstate 6 years ago. He is now 15 and unfortunately suffering from CHF. The past 6 years with him has been amazing, loving, humorous and affectionate. He is always by my side no matter where I am. He knows when it’s time for bed and always beats me there. Our bond is so strong and I have completely fallen in love with this breed. I’m facing a hard choice now about CHF and don’t want to lose my best friend but I know it’s coming soon. It’s tearing me apart. I would recommend this bread to anyone and guaranteed your lifetime with them will be a blessing.

my boyfriend and I rescued Scooby about a month ago and we absolutely love him. He loves to both lay on the couch all day and Netflix on weekends and run around the dog park at full speed. Although we live in a condo at the moment, we are moving to a house with a good sized yard in 2 months and I know that he will love it. My parents have a doggie door at their house for their dogs and Scooby figured it out immediately after seeing them go through it; he's pretty smart. He is around 45 pounds and 15 inches tall right now, but 44 inches long. It's funny to meet other dog parents and watch them try to figure out what he is. He has the face, ears and tail of a Beagle but everything else like a Basset. He is the sweetest thing in the world and likes to get between the two of us in bed at night. He turns over and just smiles because even though he has only been with us for a month, he knows that we love him more than anything. I love our Bagle hound to pieces.

We just brought him in from being an outdoor dog, after his sister passed away from what we believe was cancer. He was awfully lonely outside since he lived with his parents and sister his whole life. Although once he came in and was given anxiety medication he’s been a great boy. He doesn’t bark unless he needs something or is greeting us. This is only a special case though because his beagle mother never barked unless mandatory. He only really had accidents when we thought he wouldn’t needs his medication. He grew up with small kids and when introduced to my second cousin he was gentle and allowed her to make the first move to their interaction. Cole also understands that our dachshunds are extremely small and is very timid about trying to play fight. He doesn’t try when they want him, and one time when he tried he barked scaring the two. He is the biggest dog we ever had in our house and he’s an absolute sweetheart.

We rescued her when she was 3 and had just had puppies. She has always been very affectionate and loves being wherever we are. She has never enjoyed playing with toys/balls but enjoys burying them instead. She has much separation anxiety so we try to keep it at a minimum since we are both retired now. She is now 13 years old and we love her so much and can’t bear to think of our lives without her.

We rescued her from a shelter when she was three weeks old. She was curled up sleeping in the corner of the box while her siblings were playing rough. We knew we wanted her right there. She has kept that trait and most likely sleeps 90% of the day. However, we own a farm and whenever we take her out she works as an excellent farm dog. She can be very active and obedient when it counts on it. She has always been protective of the youngest daughter and loves meeting new humans more than new dogs. But she can be so lazy sometimes we enjoy putting her in strange positions and seeing how long she'll stay put without moving. Spoiler: she only moves when someone's opens a jar of peanut butter.
