The Chimation is a hybrid mix of two companion dogs; the Dalmatian and the Chihuahua.  Despite the how popular both parent breeds are, the Chimation is a rare hybrid, and there is little documentation on the mix.  Understanding the inherent character traits of this hybrid require owners to look at the parent breeds.  The Chihuahua is small and bred as a companion whereas the Dalmatian is a medium-sized dog originally bred as an all-around working and hunting dog but primarily today as a companion.  The resulting Chimation is a medium stature companion dog with high energy.  Both the Chihuahua and Dalmatian are leery of strangers and may have a low tolerance for small children, but will always be affectionate with its family.

Chimation Breed History

The Chimation is a hybrid of the Dalmatian and the Chihuahua.  The mix is a modern designer dog intended as a companion dog and does not have a long and well-known history.  As such, owners must look at the history of the breed parents to understand the history of this hybrid. The Chihuahua is a New World breed, having possibly crossed the Bering Strait more than 30,000 years ago and finding its way to Mesoamerica and modern-day Mexico.  The Aztec and Toltec people kept and bred the Chihuahua for vermin control by for centuries before the Chihuahua made its way north again through importation in the 1800s.  Originally short coated, the long-haired varieties of Chihuahua may have been cross bred with Silky Terriers. The Dalmatian's origins are unknown, and the dog may have traveled with nomadic bands of Romanies, also known as gypsies.  However, the Dalmatian gained its name from the province of Dalmatia on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea in modern-day Croatia.  The Dalmatian is a versatile breed capable of hunting all means of game, guarding and protecting, and coaching.  This breed's high endurance made it a perfect dog for coaching and the Dalmatian ran alongside and in front of horse-drawn carriages to clear a path and protect the coach from highwaymen.  The Dalmatian's coaching abilities were further developed in the United States as the breed came to be known as a firehouse dog who ran alongside the horses, protected equipment on scene, and rescued victims. Today, the Chimation is recognized by American Canine Hybrid Club, the Designer Dog Kennel Club, the Dog Registry of America, and the International Designer Canine Registry.  Faithful to both parents, this mix is bred for companionship and is ideally suited to small space living.

Chimation Breed Appearance

The Chimation is a medium sized dog weighing between 20 and 40 pounds and is usually 12 inches in height, but may be taller.  The Chimation's head is round or apple-shaped like the Chihuahua, and the ears usually flop down.  This hybrid is alert and has dark brown or black eyes.  The Chimation looks like a slightly larger Chihuahua but has Dalmatian markings.  The coat is usually smooth, soft, and found in the classic white with black spots, but large patches may also be present.  The hair may be slightly longer if the parent Chihuahua is a long-hair.  Other coat colors include cream with dark brown spots.

Chimation Breed Maintenance

The Chimation is a hybrid of two parents with different shedding levels.  Despite the Dalmatians short coat, this breed is a heavy shedder, while the Chihuahua is a low shedder.  You can expect this hybrid to shed moderately.  Weekly brushing with a rubber mitt or a short tooth natural brush will help keep the Chimation's coat clean and healthy looking.  The ease of the short coat maintenance also means this hybrid does not require frequent bathing.  Bathing your dog strips the natural oils from his body and may lead to dry skin and dermatitis.  The Chihuahua parent is prone to dental issues so pay attention to your Chimation’s dental health and clean his teeth at least three times a week to prevent disease.

Chimation Temperament

The Chimation is very affectionate with its family thanks to both parent breeds, but both parent breeds are leery of strangers.  While this mix will do well with older children who have respect for dogs, the Chimation is not well suited for small children who might tease and chase it.  Early socialization with children will help reduce the likeliness of snapping and growling in this hybrid. Depending on which parent breed the Chimation most resembles will determine how well your dog gets on with other dogs and cats.  The Chihuahua is not well suited for other animals but can be socialized and learn to live in harmony.  The Dalmatian gets along well with all animals and makes an excellent companion for other dogs and cats if socialized at an early age.  The Chimation is a high energy dog and requires a lot of playtime to support energy needs.

Chimation Activity Requirements

The Chimation is a mix of two medium to high-energy breeds who need daily exercise of high intensity.  Both parent breeds have high energy, but the Dalmatian parent also has excellent endurance and was born to run.  The Chimation will also have running, and high-energy requirements or this mix might develop destructive behaviors.  The Chimation, if properly exercised, can live in small spaces but a house with a large yard is ideal.  Both parent breeds prefer a warm climate, and the Chihuahua is not known to tolerate colder climates.  Your Chimation will most likely prefer it warm.

He is a puppy and I have small children. It's hard to keep them from being too rough with him but I think we do a good job of it. He loves my 1 year old no matter how rough she is. He is always follofollowing her around. He loves to cuddle and go to the park. A very curious little guy. He loves running up to everyone and everything, especially other dogs... He is like out 5th child. Now to get him potty trained 😂😑😔

My chimation is very good around kids. Although she does have anxiety due to a family not taking care of her properly. She's energetic and playful. She loves to go hiking with us and loves her treats. Training her was a but difficult but after a couple months she was back on track.

our chimation is a choosy eater. Right now he is not eating. Sometimes if you find a food he likes, he eat much but when you will refill it, with the same food, he will just smells it and will not eat it anymore. Next time you will again give him the same food, he will barely touch and will not it. What are the best food for this breed. We sometimes share our food coz everytime we are eating he comes at us begging us to share the food we are eting.
