The affectionate, fearless Mauxie is a designer hybrid which is a cross between the Dachshund and Maltese. These hybrids are admired for their long, soft fur coats and slender lean bodies. The Mauxie is a playful breed and will be an ideal companion for a new dog owner. They are often easy to train and can be suited to any climate and type of home. The Mauxie is, however, a high maintenance hybrid and will require daily brushing and regular grooming every few months. Mauxies are playful, courageous and loyal dogs that do well with other pets. They are not suited to households with younger children and should be supervised when young ones are around.

Mauxie Breed History

The playful, friendly Mauxie is a relatively new designer hybrid that recently emerged during the 21st century. The Mauxie is currently registered with the American Canine Hybrid Club, the Designer Breed Registry, the Designer Dogs Kennel Club, Dog Registry of America and the International Designer Canine Registry. This is a new hybrid and its history and origins remain unknown, however, it can be speculated that the purpose of their creation is for their beautiful aesthetics and companionship. The Maltese is an affectionate little dog that is actually considered an ancient breed since archaeological and genetic findings trace it back to Malta over 6000 to 8000 years ago. These breeds are believed to have originated in Malta, although they have been depicted in various archaeological findings across Egypt, Greece, and Rome. As these breeds are ancient it is difficult to figure out their ancestry; however, breeders believe that the Maltese may have descended from the Spitz and other Spaniel breeds. The strong-willed Dachshund can be traced back to the 15th century where they were used mainly to hunt and drive badgers, foxes and wild boars out of hiding.  Over decades, breeders began outcrossing the Dachshund with various small Pinscher and Pointer breeds in order to generate a fearless, long dog that would be able to dig through dens in order to hunt prey.

Mauxie Breed Appearance

The Mauxie is a soft, fluffy teddy bear. These hybrids often stand no more than 10 inches in height. Their most distinctive features are their long, soft fur coats which can come in an array of solid colors and bi-colors. Mauxies often have fine-boned features like the Maltese and strong, lean bodies like the Daschund. These breeds have round medium sized eyes, floppy ears and long tails that may be set high up. They tend to have a medium-sized muzzle, narrow skulls, and short legs. When looking at a Mauxie, owners will notice that their hybrid will have a very expressive puppy dog face as a result of their doe eyes.

Mauxie Breed Maintenance

These doggy divas will have medium to long fur that can be prone to matting. Mauxies may not have the full, dense, long coats of the Maltese but they still do require daily grooming. This is because Mauxies can easily trap a debris in their fur and if left uncombed, mats may develop which will cause your Mauxie discomfort. It is highly recommended that Mauxies be brushed out daily and professionally groomed every 6 to 12 weeks, particularly during the summer months. In terms of bathing, Mauxies only need to be washed when owners notice their pup has been getting dirty. Special attention needs to be given around the hind end as feces can easily get trapped or tangled in the fur over time. Teeth and ears should also be cleaned in order to prevent diseases or infections. Nails should be trimmed every 6 to 12 weeks.

Mauxies often suffer from cataracts and mitral valve disease. Secure pet health insurance today to avoid high veterinary care costs. Our pet insurance tool lets you compare plans from leading companies like Figo and Spot. Find the “pawfect” plan for your pet in just a few clicks!

Mauxie Temperament

Fearless when he needs to be, the Mauxie is a breed that will often think they are a big dog trapped in a little dog's body. These guys can be quite bossy and may engage bigger dogs in play. Mauxies tend to do great with other pets and dogs when supervised. However, when it comes to children, the Mauxie will prefer gentle, older kids who won't tug on their tails or fur too much. Mauxies can often be nippy and may not tolerate being pushed around. With strangers, Mauxies may either be curious and playful, or shy and reserved. There is often no generalized temperament a Mauxie may show towards strangers.

Mauxie Activity Requirements

Mauxies are great companions for an owner looking for a small dog that will love cuddles and attention. The Mauxie can do well in all environments and climates. They can be great apartment dogs if trained well, but some may not be easy to toilet train. The Mauxie requires 60 minutes of daily activity. Owners can choose to meet their Mauxie's needs through activities such as short walks, a lot of play time with toys and play time with other dogs. Though these hybrids are small, they can be destructive if not exercised often. Most Mauxies left home alone too long may develop separation anxiety which may be seen through excessive barking.

Hazel came to us about 7 years ago, when she was a puppy of around 3 months of age. She is very playful, has lots of energy, and despite her being already "middle-aged", she has the energy of a puppy (and even puppies become tired before she does). She looks more like her mother Maltese, with a white long coat but with her father's Dachsund body shape (she has a long body and short legs). Hazel requires constant grooming because her white coat is not straight or wavy... so she goes to the groomer at least once per month.

Our cutie Primo likes to barks at any vehicle that coming to our house. Everytime after he eats he start a rumpage at our house and he bites our slippers or feet. He is so loyal to us and even likes to look for a fight whenever theres a stranger coming our way. He is our first dog in the house and we are so happy we have him. He is so playful with big dogs but afraid of small ones lol. I recommend this dog to a new fur parent

Loooove our little guy, he has the sweetest personality and a very friendly temperament. We introduced him to kids and crowds at a young age and he loves people! He’s super playful and quirky! He has a favorite toy that we will hid and he will search for it until he finds it. When he wants to play he will bring his toy and whine until you play with him He plays well with other dogs too! Best dog I’ve ever had! He Doesnt shed!

She’s a sweet girl and somewhat independent. She’s not fond of too much petting, but she’ll let you know when she needs cuddling. At night, if I haven’t gone to bed by a certain time, she leaves me alone and goes to bed herself. With my family and my other dog she is loving and playful, with friends, other dogs or with strangers she’s reserved and shy, keeping her distance.

Skippy is a very well trained dog! Hes got lots of personality. Hes got the long body of the daschund and regular length legs which makes him a bit awkward. He hates stairs cause he cant turn around quickly. Hes got an underbite and his teeth stick out. But super cuddly and affectionate little dog!

My experience with a mauxie has been great so far! She is very stubborn at times and tends to lean to other people who are extremely nice to her since I obviously am “bad cop” telling her “no” or “get that out of your mouth” all of the time!

When they are given a chance to play around the house, they run so fast and bite each others ears, feet, and their other body parts. They are very hyper when they are hungry and they will always lick me in my face and on my skin. When I am wearing a mask, they would find a way to lick my face but I tried not to let them do that. They are very adorable especially when they are talking to you using their puppy eyes and I couldn't resist them because strangely, I could understand what they could possibly need. They are very active but after few minutes, they would get tired and sleep. They take a nap for a short period of time and they most likely to sleep when the weather is humid. They bark at dogs at the neighborhood and those dogs are triple their size but they bark at them while wagging their long tails. The big dogs would run away and our Mauxies are chasing after them and sometimes, the big dogs aren't afraid at them and would bark back at them so they would run back to me and look at me for a bit and they would go back and bark again fearlessly. Also, they also bark at strangers and they would bite their pants (if they have pants. If not, they would bite the stranger's bare skin with their small teeths) They wouldn't stop even I am trying to stop them and they are hard to catch when they are aware. Sometimes, they wouldn't bite strangers when they are not in the mood or if that person is just calm. Over all, they are really stubborn but very loyal dogs.

Fetch, Run, learning new
I really enjoy having him around, my husband and I were already in there though process of “ oh! Wow! We’re empty nesters” yeah... nope. E going out my daughter on laws Maltese was pregnant and had 4 puppies, 3 females 1 male, of coarse my husband said hey I want the male... SO he realize he is working long hours and wasn’t going to have time for Duke, so i took over and now his my loyal companion, followed me so I’ve the house, I go in the bathroom he waits for me right out side the door, I’m cooking he’s right in between my legs, sometimes I’m in rush trying to make dinner and I end up tripping on him... but I really love my crazy hyper furry friend lol his an outstanding loyal dog, not hard to teach at all, pad train real quick and loves bright color toys. Sleeps on our bed with us, right in between my husband and I, outside the blankets but in between, he loves looking out the window, we’re still getting him use to the leash, his doing good so far. 🤞

Theo is extremely friendly to other dogs and people. He has an incredibly sweet personality. I have never had a male dog before so didn't expect him to be cuddly but he sure is. He was very quick to learn his name and who we all are, definitely my shadow :). He has had a few accidents in the house but this could be because he is marking his territory. He will be getting neutered next week so hopefully this will address this situation.
