Patterdale Terrier
Jack Russell
The Patterjack pooch is a result from crossing a Patterdale Terrier with a Jack Russell Terrier. Pups in the same litter may vary in appearance and temperament but generally this is a sturdy small dog breed that is cheerful in nature and has a load of energy. They come from a working background so they need mental stimulation and regular exercise to prevent bad habits creeping in. Standing up to 14 inches in height, this solid robust dog can be a handful for the inexperience owner. The worst thing is to let them get away with bossing you around - they respect a firm pack leader whom they can respect. If not brought up properly or without any rules, it can lead to stubbornness and even aggression. Well managed, the Patterjack dog is loving, loyal and protective. They are good with children if they have been well socialised, but it is always important to supervise young children with any dog.

Patterjack Breed History

Lets look at the parent dogs to determine the history that our Patterjack Terrier will inherit. The Jack Russell originated in southern England. Parson John Russell developed the breed during the mid 1800s which is where it got its name from. The goal sought from this development was to obtain a terrier that would hunt with the hounds but more importantly go into dens after the foxes who would then bolt and the hounds would take up the chase. This active small dog became a favorite of hunters especially those on horse back. The Jack Russell Terrier became known for its enthusiastic and energetic pursuit. By the 1930s this hard working little dog was well known and popular among owners in the United States. In 2000 the American Kennel Club recognised the breed calling it the Parson Russell Terrier to distinguish it from the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America. Feisty, energetic, and a hard working dog, the Jack Russell remains a popular Terrier to this day. The Patterdale Terrier is an active dog that is a descendant of the Fell Terrier. The origins of the dog go back to Northern England hundreds of years ago where they were used to hunt and control foxes,  and eliminate vermin in both the homes and the stables. While not a lot is known about their history, they are respected for their fearless nature and hard working ability. These tough little terriers would give their all for the hunters around the Lake District, often chasing game such as the fox into the den, then going in to chase it out or to stand and fight. They were also used to hunt badgers to control the numbers. In recent times it is still used as a hunting and working dog mostly on farms, as it has been for eons. The United Kingdom recognised the Patterdale Terrier in 1995 as both a working dog and a companion. This feisty small dog made its way to the United States where it hunts for raccoons, foxes and groundhog. The Patterdale Terrier excels in a number of canine sports such as agility and racing.

Patterjack Breed Appearance

The Patterjack is a handsome dog, small yet muscular and stocky, standing about 14 inches high, with a short dense coat and alert stance and expression. The top of the head is only slightly rounded and is quite a wedge shape, with the ears set high but folding over to almost touch the end of the eye. Dark or amber eyes don't miss a trick, and the muzzle is long with teeth that meet in a scissors bite. The nose is usually black, but can be brown on liver colored dogs. A sturdy body on short strong legs, a tail held high, and a deep chest give this dog a more powerful look than its size. The coat can be one shade, or may be a combination of two colors or patches. The alert appearance and active nature demonstrates the true character of the Terrier brand.

Patterjack Breed Maintenance

The Patterjack is relatively easy to maintain. Their dense thick short coats require a brushing every two or three days to keep it slick, with an occasional combing  to rid any shedding hair. These dogs may need more bathing than some other companion dogs, due to their working nature and their tendency to dig. Just don't overdo it as it could strip the natural oil from the coat which will reduce the effectiveness of that weatherproof coat. While brushing, check for any cuts or sores that may be on their body and treat if needed. Also check their feet for injury and clip the nails when required. Ears are another area that can accumulate dirt and oil, so gently wipe the inner ear out with a damp soft cloth, drying it carefully after you have finished. Twice a week or more, brush your dogs teeth to ensure a sweet breath.

Patterjacks often suffer from patellar luxation, glaucoma, and other potentially serious health conditions. Secure pet health insurance today to avoid high veterinary care costs. Patterjack Temperament

The Patterjack dog could be best described as a sturdy cheerful dog full of energy and with the need to be doing something... anything! They are not the dog for small apartments or homes, as they need a yard to explore or ideally, the countryside. With a strong instinct to hunt they have a tendency to chase after small fast moving animals and that includes cats. It does help if your dog has been raised with a cat, but that doesn't mean it won't chase the neighbours cat. A typical terrier, they can be over confident and won't back down even to bigger dogs. Walk your dog on a leash when out walking to control its natural chasing instincts. This beautiful dog requires strong leadership. Being easy on this dog will do it no favors, it needs strong consistent leadership to keep it out of trouble. These are dogs that need jobs! They need to be challenged such as agility work, farm work, or taken on long walks in the country to tire them out. As a family dog they get along well with children. If they have been raised with the children they will be affectionate and caring. Teach the children to respect the dog and don't pull his tail or stretch his ears or mess with his food, as this dog may not have the patience to put up with rough treatment. Best described as a true working dog, yet loyal, affectionate and a good looking dog, the Patterjack requires a firm confident hand to bring the best out in him.

Patterjack Activity Requirements

The Patterjack dog is an active dog that comes from a working background. They need to have at least one long walk a day, two would be ideal. Challenge their minds by involving some agility work, or set tasks that they need to solve to keep those busy minds occupied. They can be overconfident or stubborn when trying to train. These dogs are not for the inexperienced owner as they can take over and become aggressive and willful if you are not careful. The Patterjack dog needs an active family, they don't want to just sit and snuggle, they want to be doing things. Not suited to an apartment, as they are too active and can be quite vocal. They are suited to most climates and love a country setting with plenty of work to do.

Really energetic, smart, stubborn (kinda.) Will be ok with larger animals that will put them back in there place like cats, larger dogs (they can be ruff) and we even keep them with larger chicken breeds. Really playful so they would like lots of area to run and lots of walks. A really great dog nonetheless.

So we’ve had Alfie since he was 7 years old and he’s amazing. Though since we’ve had him he doesn’t like other dogs yet he is fantastic with people and children. He loves going on walks yet chilling in his bed watching tv is his favourite past time now that he’s getting older. The best way to describe him is a cheerful grandad lol. He loves his food! He’s also been my first ever dog best 6 years of my life. (Alfie is a libra)

She’s 15 years old. Outlived our German Shepherd, 13 years. Faithful, protective, not as clever as the GSD. Affectionate to family/pack. Good with local sheep and Cattle. Deadly to rats and mice. We lover to bits, even if she is now half blind and deaf as a post!

Jasper is a fun loving Patterjack, he has his issues with guarding the house and going on walks. But in all honesty he used to be a friendly dog, till he was attacked by some larger dogs. But this breed of dog is brilliant with children, I have never met a more loving dog who is so protective and bouncy. He likes bathtime and chasing his tail afterwards. Patterjacks are easy to train when encouraged with treats, after that they'll remember to do the tricks over and over again. Jasper is highly intelligent, he enjoys leaping over 5ft walls to the neighbours gardens to fetch his ball.

Zeek is an absolute dream. He's very intelligent and masters anything we teach him quickly. At 4 months old he can already sit, lie down, paw and ring the bell we have at the back door for him - so we know he needs to go out and do business. For a puppy, he isn't really destructive. He does try to dig in our garden but can be easily led away.

Very affectionate dog, loyal, fun, curious. Adventurous, have lost her in hedges following a scent. She loves to chase the ball and be free to run though fields. Although she enjoys lead walks she clearly prefers being off the lead. She loves to lick you and sleep on your lap. She can spend ages in the garden sniffing and digging

We have had her nearly a year and in that year she has already had a Patella Luxation operation on her leg as a result of being kicked in her previous home. She is a very affectionate girl and also very vocal. We are her 3rd home in 2 years as her previous owners didn't want her.

Very affectionate, she has not destroyed furniture or been naughty in this way at all. She loves sitting on laps and sleeping on people. So will do anything for a tennis ball, but totally destroys them when she gets one. Loves other dogs (but can be nervous around some). She’s bossy and stubborn but she’s small enough to pick up and not let her get away with it. She loves to bury treats and loves a ride in the car!

Picked Frankie up three days ago, she was the first to leave mum, does business on paper which I feel is good for 8 weeks, eats well, three small meals a day, plays a little, even though she had teeth like needles at the moment and sleeps well if on one of our laps, bought her a crate as a safe place with the hope that over the next few days we can start getting her to sleep in there during the night as I think at the moment she is struggling with separation from mum and siblings... managed to get her to sleep in crate during the day today for a short period but as soon as she wakes she cries a lot, looking forward to seeing how training progresses

Moose has always been a little ball of energy. she gets along well with new dogs she meets but is wary of new people coming into or around the household. She lives with 2 other dogs one who is 8 years old and another who is only 6 months and she gets along well with the new puppy the only issue is she’s a bad influence when it comes to destroying the lawn or furniture as Rosie, the puppy always follows suit. She is stubborn at times, refusing to come back when called but also sticks by your side like glue. I read that jack russell’s like to sleep under covers of the bed and Moose does that every night, like her own personal cave. When she’s up for it, she will jump on your lap and cuddle you all day but other times she will ignore you even exist. She is extremely Food driven and will do anything and everything to have something off your plate. She is my first terrier dog to ever own and it has been the best decision i’ve made as I now have a best friend for life.
