The Podengo Portugueso Pequeño is the smallest variety of the Podengo Portugueso. He is a sight hound who closely resembles the Cirneco Dell’Etna, Ibizan Hound and Pharaoh Hound. Many researchers believe that all these dogs share the same ancestors. The Podengo Portugueso Pequeño was primary used to hunt rabbits in their native Portugal. He is a friendly and energetic dog who will happily chase cats and other small animals. He is low maintenance and should be an indoor dog rather than relegated to a kennel or the backyard. He can easily become a nuisance if he does not have human companionship.

Podengo Portugueso Pequeno Breed History

The Podengo Portugueso Pequeño is a national dog of Portugal. It is suggested that he descends from the ancient hounds from the Iberian Peninsula around 1,000 BC. These hounds adapted to the Portuguese terrain and climate and became excellent rabbit hunters. He shares many ancestors with the Pharaoh Hound, Cirneco Dell’Etna and Ibizan Hound. The Podengo Portugueso Pequeño is considered to be one of the world’s oldest dog breeds. He has not changed much since the first dogs were brought over by the Romans and Phoenicians. He is the smallest of the Podengo Portugueso family and does best when in a pack. His initial name was Podengo de Mostra; mostra means pack. The name was then shortened to Podengo and then eventually lengthened again so the size variations could also be added. There are Podengo type dogs in Spain, Portugal, Malta, Sicily, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, the Azores and the Madeira Islands. They came to these locations from the Romans and Phoenicians and dogs in each of these locations adapted to their new climate and terrain. The Podengo Portugueso Pequeño was first imported into the United States during the 1990s. He is officially recognized by the Federation Cynologique Internationale in Europe. He was also officially recognized by the United Kennel Club and the American Rare Breed Association. He was accepted into the American Kennel Club’s Foundation Stock Service which is the first step to becoming officially recognized by the AKC. The Podengo Portugueso Pequeño is also now recognized as a member of the AKC’s Miscellaneous Class.

Podengo Portugueso Pequeno Breed Appearance

The Podengo Portugueso Pequeño comes in two coat types. The smooth coat is very dense and short. The wire haired or rough coat is long and harsh, he has longer hair on his muzzle that resembles a beard. The wire haired variety is not as dense as the smooth. Neither variety has an undercoat. He should never have a silky coat. His coat should be left natural and not be trimmed or sculpted. He comes in several different colors that are a variation of yellow or fawn, ranging from light to dark shades. His color can be solid, except for solid white. He can have white markings or be white with color markings. Brown and black are acceptable colors but not really desirable. He has a wedge shaped head and his ears are erect. He is also well muscled and very lively. He is a small hound standing between 8 and 12 inches at the shoulder and weighing between 9 and 13 pounds.

Podengo Portugueso Pequeno Breed Maintenance

The Podengo Portugueso Pequeño is generally a low maintenance dog. Both coat varieties do require weekly brushing to minimize the amount of loose hairs that float through the air. Since neither coat variety has an undercoat, there is minimal shedding. The only shedding that is seen is when the dead or loose topcoat comes out. Hair can easily be found on furniture and clothes around the house. The wire-haired variety does need to have his facial hair or beard combed almost daily to keep it clean and free of food and dirt. The wire haired Podengo Portugueso Pequeño needs to be brushed using a pin brush or a natural bristle brush. The smooth coated Podengo Portugueso Pequeño can be groomed with a hound mitt or a rubber curry brush. He does not require too many baths, usually three to six months between baths unless he has been on a hunt and gets excessively dirty.

Podengo Portugueso Pequeno Temperament

The Podengo Portugueso Pequeño is an intelligent and lively hound who is a great watch dog. He is not known for being aggressive towards humans or other dogs, but he can see cats and small pets as prey. He should never be left alone with cats or small pets. He wants to please and picks up commands quickly. He is very trainable as a sight hound and loves participating in dog sports such as agility and lure coursing. He also excels at obedience and rally. When training him, use positive reinforcement. He does not respond well to negative or rough treatment. He loves to dig and bark, therefore do not leave him outside for long periods of time where he can become bored. He can become a nuisance barker if left to his own defenses. He enjoys long walks with his family and also interactive toys and games that make him think.

He passed down through a couple families. While not a rescue, we did pay for him from an owner who was changing lifestyle. At the very instant we got him, we was kissing my wife what seemed like forever. Upon entering our home, he sprang into immediate excitement. He spends every minute with us except when sun bathing in the mornings. Lives for food and attention and is loyal to a fault.

Very intimate, full of personality, always making us laugh with her expressions. Manipulative and clever, but sweet and loves cuddles. Runs 15km with me no worries, very heat tolerant. Anxious about unfamiliar dogs and people, but will make friends if given the chance to interact at her own pace.
