Poodle
The Pugapoo is a hybrid dog. His parent breeds are the Pug and the Poodle. He is highly adaptable, loving, and intelligent. He gets along well with cats and children, and he will do well in either an apartment or a home with a fenced-in area. He is also a fairly healthy dog. He is not hypoallergenic, but he is not prone to a lot of shedding (the exact amount of  shedding will be determined by the type of coat the Pugapoo inherits from his parents). He is a good watchdog; however, his small stature will not be very intimidating to would-be intruders. Overall, the Pugapoo will make a sweet and loving addition to your family.

Pugapoo Breed History

The Pugapoo has come to popularity within the last twenty or so years. However, we do not know his exact origins. In order to understand the history of the Pugapoo, we must look to his parent breeds. The Pug was a favorite of royals and nobility for a majority of his existence. He was a favorite of the Chinese emperor, and Marie Antoinette owned a pug prior to her marriage to Louis XVI. Queen Victoria, a dog lover and avid dog breeder, owned and bred several Pugs during her lifetime. One Pug is said to have "told" William of Orange of an approaching enemy, and after William successfully fended off the attack, he proclaimed the Pug the "official dog of the House of Orange." The Pug made his way to the United States after the Civil War, and the American Kennel Club registered the first Pug in 1885. The Poodle was developed for hunting waterfowl. He is also considered an ancient dog; his ancestors came from Germany, but the breed overall was developed in France. Most experts believe that the Poodle was a descendant of Asian herding dogs. No one is certain of how they made the journey from the Orient to Europe, but he was there by the 8th century for certain. Illustrations of the Poodle have appeared on Egyptian artwork. The Poodle has been a hunter and a herder as well as a circus performer. The Poodle made his appearance in America in the late 1880s. He was registered with the American Kennel Club in 1886.

Pugapoo Breed Appearance

The Pugapoo will have a distinctive look, and his looks will truly be based upon the dominant traits of the parent breed. To be sure, each Pugapoo has its own distinct look. Some inherit the hair of the Pug parent; if so, he will have short and smooth fur. He may inherit longer straight hair or longer curly hair. He may also inherit the shortened snout of the Pug parent. His size will greatly depend on the dominant parent as well. He may be a small dog weighing no more than ten pounds, or he may be closer to a medium-sized dog, weighing closer to thirty pounds. His color will vary; he may be white or cream colored, tan, fawn, or he may be black or gray. Again, this will be determined by the dominant parent breed. As one expert suggested, with the Pug, it is like opening a gift - you don't know exactly what you're going to get with this hybrid breed.

Pugapoo Breed Maintenance

The Pugapoo generally does not require much in the way of maintenance, but the exact amount of grooming he requires is based upon the type of coat he inherits. If he inherits the short, straight coat of his Pug parent, maintenance will be a breeze. Weekly brushing simply to remove dead hair is all he should need to keep his coat looking healthy. If he inherits the longer hair of his Poodle parent, regardless of whether his coat is straight or curly, he will require a little more time regarding maintenance. Bathe him once every three to six weeks should he have longer hair. If he inherits the short coat, bathe him only when necessary. The natural oils of his coat will keep his coat shiny and healthy. Brush his teeth two or three times a week to prevent bad breath and the build-up of tartar. To prevent tooth decay, however, brush his teeth daily. Trim his nails every two or three weeks.

Pugapoo Temperament

The Pugapoo truly is a puppy that is the best of both worlds! He will be loyal, affectionate, and a great cuddle buddy! He is highly intelligent; in fact, you might want to invest in toys that not only give him physical activities, but stimulate his mind as well. Without proper mental stimulation, the Pugapoo is prone to getting into mischief. Although his size is not a deterrent to would-be intruders, he is a great watchdog. He will certainly let you know when someone he doesn't know enters his territory. The Pugapoo is a lovable dog, but he is best recommended for homes with children who are old enough to understand how to handle a small dog.

Pugapoo Activity Requirements

The Pugapoo is a fairly active dog. He will enjoy short, brisk walks around the neighborhood with you, and he will also enjoy trips to the dog park. Again, he needs mental stimulation in addition to physical activity. At a minimum, your Pugapoo will need at least forty-five minutes of play time daily. When he is younger, he may need an hour to an hour and one-half of activity time. Because he may be brachycephalic, you should be encouraged to break activity time into smaller amounts. Brachycephalic syndrome is caused by a short snout, and it can have an adverse affect on the breathing of the affected dog. Never allow your Pugapoo to become overexerted, and certainly keep him from overheating. Keep a bottle of water handy as you exercise with your dog - you may have to give him some water and allow him to cool down somewhat during very hot weather.

Jasper has been a loyal, protective, affectionate dog. He has very wavy hair that gets very long and matted. He needs approximately 4-6 grooming a year (we let it grow out quite a bit before shaving him down). His hair was black and he had 2 tan/golden sisters. He took slightly longer to train than I would have preferred but he’s obedient now and rarely needs a leash. He can be jealous at times, especially when we brought home our daughter or when there are other dogs around. He also misbehaves when he is upset about something (ie takes something that he knows he’s not supposed to touch, etc). Jasper has had some health problems, but some of them were due to being attacked by another dog as a puppy. He has had both of his back legs operated on due to tearing a tendon after jumping from a high place. Jasper has hypothyroidism and requires medication once daily. He gives hugs, kisses, and knows many tricks (though he never learned to roll over, I believe it hurts his back). Hes a fan of shallow water and light swimming. He’s a squirrel chaser and has eyed my in laws rabbit. He does okay with other dogs most of the time - he is usually wary first, especially with big dogs but I believe that is from the previously mentioned attack. He gets the zoomies regularly (less now that he’s 13) and LOVES trips in the truck. He walks literally anywhere, and is enthusiastic about chasing a ball (though it’s rare he gives it back!), playing tug of war. He is a very good boy.

He loves to play with the chickens and turkey when we go outside to feed them, he loves to play with his two older sisters, one being an American Pitbull, Domino, and one being a peek-a-poo, Shania. He really loves to play in the creek when it’s summer time. He’s very protective of us and his sisters. He’s such a loving dog and he’s just perfect! We love him so much!

She gets extremely excited for everything. And she’s very loving and sweet and needy. She needs lots of attention and exercise. She has so much energy and loves to play with toys and mini tennis balls. Even after a 4 hour hike, she still had energy to play with her toys at home.
