Description

Camp by the West Branch of the Farmington River at Austin Hawes Memorial Campground. This furrific facility in the American Legion State Forest offers six cabins (none of which are pet-friendly), 27 non-electric sites, and one tent-only spot. Up to six people can camp in each area. You'll have access to flush toilets, potable water, and showers here. Other amenities include firewood and picnic facilities. At this central location, you'll have easy access to the river, climbing areas, hiking trails, and more.

The campground sits near the water in a wooded area, so you'll have plenty of shade over your site. Bring a kayak, canoe, or innertube to ride the rapids on this designated Wild and Scenic River. These waters also offer prime trout fishing -- bring your rod and reel and cast it in the current to see what you can catch.

Land-lovers can explore over 11 miles of hiking paths through the forest. Head north on West River Road to the old bridge to connect to the Henry Buck Trail. Climb up the Tremendous Cliffs for panoramic views of the area, and marvel at the ruins of an old cheese box mill. Haven't had your fill of local history? Learn about Connecticut's heritage at the nature museum. This display is open between Memorial Day and Labor Day and houses artifacts, rocks, insects, flora, and fauna.

You can bring one pet per campsite when you stay here. Pups need to be on-leash and attended at all times, and you'll need to bring proof of rabies vaccinations with you. Dispose of Fido's waste properly to keep the forest and site clean.

The excellent trout fishing and river rapids make the campground in the American Legion State Forest a high-demand facility. We advise booking a reservation at least one day before your planned vacation. Nightly fees are $17 for Connecticut residents and $27 for non-residents. While you're in the area, check out the Barkhamsted Lighthouse and the centuries-old pines at Whittemore Recreation Area.

Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.
