Description

Stone Mountain, a massive dome of exposed granite in North Carolina's Alleghany and Wilkes counties, needs no introduction. This imposing peak dominates the surrounding landscape, and is also the site for a big and beautiful state park. Found 60 miles northwest of Winston-Salem, this 14,351-acre state park boasts spectacular scenery and just about every type of outdoor activity you can imagine. Best of all, your pet is permitted to join you for your camping vacation within the park.

Stone Mountain itself is undoubtedly the highlight of any visit to the park. It's a spectacular sight that's well worth seeing in person, while rock climbers who obtain a permit can tackle the imposing, 600-foot granite face of this iconic natural landmark.

If that sounds a little too extreme for you, there are more than 18 miles of trails hikers can use to explore the park. The walks range from moderate to strenuous, and there's also a five-mile bridle trail for visitors with horses.

If you love fishing, you'll no doubt want to try your luck in the 20-odd miles of trout streams that snake their way through Stone Mountain State Park. Other recreational activities on offer include picnicking (at 75 individual picnic sites and three large shelters) and checking out Hutchinson Homestead, a restored mid-19th century mountain farm.

Tent and RV camping is available with more than 90 sites provided, and pets are permitted in the campground. Of course, you'll need to take care to stick to all park rules and regulations surrounding dogs. These include keeping your pet on a leash of six feet or less, only taking your pooch to designated pet-friendly areas, and cleaning up after them whenever necessary.

Stone Mountain State Park offers something for everyone. So no matter what type of pet-friendly camping vacation you're planning, make sure you add it to your list of must-visit destinations.
