William B. Umstead State Park

Located in Wake County, North Carolina, this 5,599-acre park is a hugely popular spot for outdoor recreation enthusiasts of all ages. Best of all, it features a pet-friendly campground where you and your pooch can stay a night or three in comfort.

The park is probably best known for its extensive trail network, which features a number of hiking and multi-use trails. There are more than 20 miles of hiking trails and approximately 13 miles of multi-use trails, so everyone from hikers to mountain bikers and horse riders is well catered for.

These trailheads leave from various points around the park's three man-made lakes. The largest of the lakes is the unimaginatively named Big Lake, and canoe and rowboat rentals are offered to help you get out on the water. Fishing is also permitted in all the lakes.

The William B. Umstead State Park campground is open March 15 through December 1. There are twenty-eight campsites nestled among a hardwood forest, with each site featuring a picnic table and grill. Although hookups are not available, drinking water, restrooms, and showers are all situated in a central location. While there's no park entry fee to worry about, make sure you're aware of the camping fee that applies when booking a site.

Dogs are permitted in William B. Umstead State Park, including in the campground, but you'll need to follow a few simple rules if you want to stay with your pet. Keep them leashed (maximum length of eight feet) and under control at all times, stick to designated pet-friendly areas, and clean up after your dog when needed.
