John C Howell Park
Brighten your pup’s day with a walk through this pawsome little park. Nestled right in the heart of the Virginia-Highland neighborhood, this park may be small on space, but it is big on history. Years ago, 11 houses in the area were demolished to create a new freeway. Plans for the interstate eventually fell through, and the park was created. If you have a minute, check out the 11 granite columns on Virginia Avenue that represent the houses.
Your furry friend will have a woofderful time strolling
through this delightful pawperty. It’s only 2.8 acres, so it won’t take long to
see the whole thing. Follow the paved walkways so your pup can get the lay of
the land. If they are in the mood for a less structured walk, mosey around the open
grass areas. Their nose will get right to work as they breathe in all the new
smells. The east lawn has a circular pathway that features commemorative
bricks. If your pup needs to paws for a break, sit down on one of the benches or
find a soft spot under one of the many trees.
Since the park is on the smaller side, the sport
amenities are pretty limited. There are a couple volleyball courts. A fun fact
for your four legged pal-they are actually the oldest sand volleyball courts in
Atlanta. John C Howell Park has a pawsome playground. It’s also home to a furrific wrought iron
sculpture of a Phoenix, the City of Atlanta’s symbol.
Do your part to keep this puptacular park free of doggy
debris. Always have a clean up bag ready to go and promptly pick up after your
pooch. Also, your pup will be most appreciative if you have some cold drinking
water on hand.
