The Bassador is a hybrid dog breed between two well-loved breeds, the Basset Hound and the Labrador Retriever and has been a popular hybrid dog breed for the last ten to twenty years. The Bassador is low to the ground, like its Basset Hound parent and can have sad, expressive eyes like the Basset Hound. Otherwise, this hybrid dog breed looks very much like its Labrador Retriever parent and has a similar disposition to the Labrador. The Bassador is a designer or hybrid dog breed whose was cross bred for companionship rather than hunting or retrieving. However, the long history of hunting that runs in both parent breeds may this hybrid suited to taking to the fields as well.

Bassador Breed History

The Bassador is a hybrid mix of two popular, well-loved dog breeds, the Basset Hound and the Labrador Retriever. Though this hybrid has been a popular choice for nearly twenty years, little documentation is currently available on the mix, and it is presently only recognized by the Dog Registry of America. As such, the history is limited and reviewing the histories of the parent breeds is necessary to understand the disposition and other character traits of the Bassador.
The Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog and was first developed in Canada to assist fisherman. Surprisingly, this breed nearly faced extinction in the 1880s when female Labradors were culled from litters in Canada due to the high tax rates. Thankfully, the Labrador was imported to England and America by this time and was gaining popularity as a hunting companion and retriever.
The Labrador’s happy, easy going disposition make him an ideal family dog who has stayed top dog in the US, Canada, and England for several decades. The Basset Hound was first developed a French curiosity among the aristocracy, but after the French Revolution, this breed became a popular choice among commoners for hunting. The common French folk were unable to hunt on horseback and needed a dog they could keep up with on foot. The short, sturdy legs of the Basset Hound were perfect for foot hunting.
The Basset Hound did not gain popularity in the United States until the 20th century, despite being brought over during Colonial times. The 1960s saw the introduction of the Hush Puppy, and the popularity of the Basset Hound only grew from there.

Bassador Breed Appearance

The Bassador looks like both a Basset Hound and a Labrador. Both dog breeds have expressive eyes that can appear sad or thoughtful. The most prominent Basset Hound trait on this hybrid is the short, sturdy legs of this low to ground hybrid. The front paws turn out slightly as well. The muzzle is long and thin, and the ears are slightly longer than a Labrador but shorter than a Basset Hound. However, the ears are quite large. The body on the Bassador is exaggeratedly longer than it is tall, just like on the Basset Hound. The coat is short and dense and usually seen in a solid color like that of the Labrador. However, patches of white may grace the chest and feet of the Bassador.

Bassador Breed Maintenance

The Bassador is a hybrid mix between two dogs known to shed moderately to heavily depending on the season. This is not a hypoallergenic dog and requires daily brushing and grooming to help keep the shedding down. A stiff brush and a hound mitt will help remove dead and loose hair. While brushing your Bassador, always check their ears and remove any wax, dirt, or debris. This hybrid dog breed has larger ears and is more prone to collecting unwanted build-up that could lead to an ear infection. Daily grooming will significantly reduce the chances of your Bassador developing a hound “doggy” odor, but you may need to occasionally bathe your Bassador with a hypoallergenic shampoo to help clean him. Frequent baths are not suggested as this may strip the natural oils from your Bassador and cause dermatitis.

Most pet insurance companies don’t cover pre-existing conditions. To avoid stress and high veterinary care costs, insure your pet today. To avoid high veterinary care costs, secure pet health insurance today and save up to $273 each year.

Bassador Activity Requirements

The Bassador has an excellent temperament thanks to both parent breeds. The Labrador is one of the most well-known, all-around family dogs, and no one questions its top dog position in popularity. The Basset Hound, though not equally as popular, still enjoys notoriety for its gentle, docile nature. Considered well-mannered, if not a lazy dog, the Basset Hound is rarely animated unless on the scent trail and even then, he’s still much more well-mannered than his Hound cousins.
Together, the Labrador Retriever and the Basset Hound equal a slightly stubborn but great family dog that is exceptional with children and friendly towards strangers. Their stubborn nature may make the Bassador more difficult to train, but with proper praise and food-based motivation, they make excellent dogs for novice, inexperienced dog owners.
The Labrador Retriever amps up this hybrid’s exercise needs, but moderate energy levels mean the Bassador only requires medium intensity exercise, like a good walk at a steady pace.

She has been the sweetest, most affectionate dog. She LOVES snuggles and is always ready to cuddle at the drop of a hat! She listens fairly well, but tends to have a stubborn streak when walking. She keeps her nose to the ground and would surely run off at first sight of a rabbit or cat is she were off lead.

She is beautiful, she’s well behaved . LOVES children and affection. She also is a big fan of cuddling with ma or any old place on the floor sprawled out or her signature more is on her back all fours in the air . She’s goofy and all around a good girl , she trained very young was a bit stubborn to potty train but she was born in a colder season so I wouldn’t blame her . She enjoys socializing with other bigs and small dogs .

Teddy is an amazing dog. I have had him for a lot of my life and he is pretty much perfect. We have had almost no problems with his health, he has just had some cuts on his ears that didn’t heal properly and some teeth problems. He is very energetic and loves walks, even at 12 years old! He is incredible. And you can follow him on Instagram @teddykirkpatrick to see his cute face!

Adopted Baby Dog from a rescue - his rescue name was Ian, so his formal name is Ian Augustus, but he just goes by Gus, Baby Dog, or Long Dog 😂 (he really answers to whatever). He’s very lazy - we love naps! He loves to chew up all things stuffed, and definitely enjoys a bone. He does like to “burry” his bones (in couch cushions, in piles of laundry, etc.) then he cries as whines as if he’s concerned about the location he chose - it’s quite precious. He’s alert in that he notices when cars pull up or whatever but not a big barker. He’s ALWAYS excited to see me and can jump, literally, 6 feet in the air. I am giving him daily joint supplements, as his front legs are EXTRA bowed, but his mobility, and especially his abilities to jump, aren’t affected.

Got our's at 2.5-3 months old and hes 2 and a half now and thriving! Everyone who meets him falls in love with his friendly demeanor, even folks generally uneasy around dogs! Hes very people, and dog friendly,as well as love's kids! Maybe more than dogs! Loves food the most, will get overweight if you let him. But no health issues other than ear infections (two this far). He enjoys activity and sniffing around more than socializing with dogs at the dog park. Very affectionate/ cuddly, kinda lazy at home. But much like a lab, becomes energetic in exciting situations with many people, or outside/near water. All around best dog! Literally can not think of any other tricks to teach this dog. Still haven't even nuetured him because I have Hope's to breed him and get a puppy of his hes so great! 10/10 would recommend for ANY to-be dog owner.

Bailey was rescued as a stray when she was guessed to be 2-years-old. She is the color of a Golden Retriever with white markings on chest and belly. MOST of the time, her favorite thing is to take naps, but she also needs some exercise every day (1/2 hour playing vigorous fetch seems to do the job.)She LOVES people and dogs. She SHOULD be brushed every day. (A four-day "harvest" would make a full matching toupee for a certain "politician"!) She loves petting, scratching, and belly rubs -- demanding them a few times every day -- but she goes off by herself to nap.

Well marley moo was a rescue dog and the advert said adventerous and outgoing. Unfortunately she's the opposite at home she's very laid back almost horizontal in fact she is. But on a walk she can be outgoing when she's sniffing the same spot for ten minutes or more which is very frustrating. But she's a very friendly dog loves other dogs. Not too keen on small children. Snores like a good un. She won't come to the door and greet you she may raise an ebrow at as away of greeting but if I pop to the shop and my wife waits with marley then she will greet me enthusiasticly like a normal dog lol x

Ginny had just given birth to 5 puppies when I fostered her and her litter of two day old pups. We fell in love, have traveled all over together, and run together every morning. She nods her head "yes" when I ask her if she wants a treat, she stands up and closes the door when she comes inside. She gets her leash and brings it to me when she wants to go outside. I cannot imagine life without my little companion.

Daisy is the sweetest dog. She loves more than anything else to spend time with her family. She loves the outdoors, but would rather come inside to be with us if we are not outside. Now that she is 14 she is slowing down, but she can still be pretty lively. She is eager to please but is not without a touch of mischief. She loves her treats and, occasionally, something stolen and yummy. We have two cats, and she has always been very trustworthy with them. She was wonderful with our daughters. She loves to nap on her couch, but prefers to sleep on a blanket on the floor at night right next to our bed. We love her so much and are so glad she is doing so well at her age. We will miss her so much when she is gone.

After many months of working with him, he is now a total different pup! His legs are “bow legged” so he has trouble going up and down stairs but is a fighter. We are now in the process of getting him help with his disabled legs so he can be the puppy he wants to be! I am grateful to have adopted him, he has taught me so much.
