Golden Retreiver

The Golden Bullmastiff Retriever is a hybrid mix of the Bullmastiff and the Golden Retriever. Both parents are large, and the Bullmastiff is considered a giant. The hybrid Golden Bullmastiff Retriever is also a considerably large dog and makes for an excellent guardian and protector of the family. The Bullmastiff parent is an intimidating size but is gentle and courageous. The Golden Retriever parentage helps soften the Bullmastiff’s looks and reduced the size slightly. Hybrids of these parents can resemble either breed but carry distinctive physical traits of both, such as hair color or head shape. No matter which breed that dominates the looks, owners can expect the Golden Bullmastiff Retriever to drool a lot.

Golden Bullmastiff Retriever Breed History

The Golden Bullmastiff Retriever is hybrid of two large dogs, the Bullmastiff and the Golden Retriever. The hybrid is a modern dog with minimal documented history or information. Owners interested in understanding the potential characteristics and traits of the Golden Bullmastiff Retriever will have to look at the parent breeds for insight as not much else is currently known. It is currently unknown if the Golden Bullmastiff is recognized by any registries or clubs. The Golden Retriever is one of the top dogs chosen by families in North America today. Developed in Scotland  as a retriever and hunter, it is thought that a variety of breeds were utilized to make this agile and intelligent canine, including the Wavy-Coated Retriever, the Tweed Water Spaniel (now extinct), the Red Setter, and the Yellow Retriever. A gentle, calm, and loyal dog indoors, this breed was also an expert in the hunting field. The American Kennel Club added the Golden Retriever to its roster in 1925. The Bullmastiff is a relatively new breed having developed in England during the 19th Century. English gamekeepers who had trouble with poachers needed an aggressive dog who could overpower a man and keep him pinned down. English Mastiffs had the size but lacked the energy or aggression required and English Bulldogs had the tenacity but lacked the size. The intentional breeding of the English Mastiff and the English Bulldog resulted in the modern-day Bullmastiff, who is not as large as his Mastiff ancestors but is strong and quick enough to run a man down. As poaching declined in England, the Bullmastiff turned its attention to guarding, and the 20th Century the hybrid Bullmastiff become a recognized breed. The American Kennel Club recognized the first Bullmastiff, named Fascination of Felons Fear in 1934.

Golden Bullmastiff Retriever Breed Appearance

The Golden Bullmastiff Retriever is a hybrid between the Bullmastiff and the Golden Retriever and can look like either parent breed depending on the dominant appearance. This is a large dog that can weigh up to 110 pounds or more with a sturdy, muscular build. If the Golden Bullmastiff Retriever leans more towards the Bullmastiff parent, it will have a square shaped head and short, broad muzzle. The coat may be short and dense and show significant skin folding, like the Bullmastiff. However, if the coat resembles the Golden Retriever, it will be longer with more feathering around the ears, tail, and legs. If the Golden Bullmastiff Retriever leans more towards the Golden Retriever, its head will be round on top and a longer muzzle. The ears of a Golden Bullmastiff Retriever lay down, and the eyes are light to dark brown and oval-shaped.

Golden Bullmastiff Retriever Breed Maintenance

The Golder Bullmastiff is not a hypoallergenic dog and can shed moderately. Bi weekly grooming will help remove dead and loose hair and keep your Golden Bullmastiff Retriever’s coat healthy. Though this hybrid does not shed much, it does drool a lot. The Bullmastiff has a large mouth and tongue that pants and drools near-constant. The hybrid is not prone to dental disease but regular teeth brushing and cleaning will give you an opportunity to check his teeth and gums and prevent bad dog breath. Frequent nail clipping is also suggested for your Golden Bullmastiff Retriever who may not often run against hard surfaces that naturally wear the nails down.

Golden Bullmastiff Retriever Temperament

The Golden Bullmastiff Retriever is a low to medium energy hybrid that loves its family. Unlike the friendly Golden Retriever, the Bullmastiff parent makes this mix slight leery of strangers and protective of its family. The Golden Bullmastiff Retriever may make for a good guard dog but don’t expect a lot of vocalization out of this hybrid. The Golden Bullmastiff Retriever is patient and highly protective of children. However, this large breed and may not be well suited for living with very young children who may not know how to interact in a safe manner. The Golden Bullmastiff Retriever adapts well to sharing space with other dogs. This hybrid can live with cats but needs early socialization to live in harmony. The Golden Retriever parent is always eager whereas the Bullmastiff can be slightly stubborn, making this hybrid a more challenging to train and not well-suited for novice dog owners.

Golden Bullmastiff Retriever Activity Requirements

The Golden Bullmastiff Retriever is a hybrid of two breeds with different energy needs. The Golden Retriever, who is often considered the mellow parent in a hybrid mix, appears to have more energy and a great need for exercise when compared to the Bullmastiff. The Golden Bullmastiff Retriever needs up to one hour of daily exercise but this can be spread over the course of the day with casual walks. Your dog should also avoid exercise after eating or drinking. If your Golden Bullmastiff Retriever gets all his exercise, he can adapt to urban and apartment living, despite his large size. When it comes to climates, this large dog likes it a little cooler but will adapt will to non-extreme conditions.

We adopted our girl as a puppy from the SPCA. She had a golden retriever mother and bullmastiff father. We just lost her yesterday to cancer and I miss her dearly. She was the best dog I’ve ever come in contact with. Friendly, sweet, amazing temperament. I’m scared I will never find another like her.
