The Havashire dog is a lively and entertaining small dog that has a protective side to her nature. She may be aloof at first with new people, but will be won over by a show of attention once she is sure there is no threat to the family. Affectionate and loving towards her family, she has a happy nature and loads of energy, but also has a mind of her own which will test your resolve during training. Patience and consistency is vital at these times, and the use of praise and rewards are the way to overcome this obstacle. The Havashire dog loves to be with their human family, they will feel unhappy if they are not involved in the family activities and left alone. If you don't have time for a dog that will be glued to your side, then this is not the dog for you. They crave your attention and adore being fussed over. In return, they are loyal and devoted companions.

Havashire Breed History

The Havashire does not yet have a full history of its performance to date, but we can look at the parent dogs (the Yorkshire Terrier and the Havanese dog) to see some common characteristics of what the Havashire has inherited. The Havanese Dog was introduced into Cuba in 1492 when the first settlers from Spain began to arrive, bringing their small dogs with them. These dogs bred with the local dogs on the island and over time evolved into the Havanese we know of today. These dogs were very popular in the early 1800s, mostly among the rich set in Cuba as a sign of status. The Havanese then caught the eyes of the rich and noble in Europe and they spread all over the continent. Sadly, their popularity waned and by the late 1800s they had almost disappeared from both Cuba and Europe. When the Cubans fled into America after the 1952 Revolution, some of the remaining Havashire dogs were taken with them and over the years the breed has slowly been re-established. The Yorkshire Terrier has a noble and confident air, but its history began when they were used for catching mice and rats around the mills in England. A typical Terrier, they were fast, dedicated and extrememly good at their job. The Yorkshire Terrier resulted from a breeding program initiated by the mid 19th Century Scottish Workers who came to Yorkshire looking for work and brought their Paisley Terriers (also known as Clydesdale Terriers) with them. These dogs were the ancestors of the Yorkshire Terrier, the first of the breed recorded in a show in 1861. Their name changed to Yorkshire Terrier because that was where the breeding programs originated from. They are clever little dogs, with an adventurous spirit with a mischievous twist. Cuddly and affectionate, they are true individuals who will keep you entertained for hours.

Havashire Breed Appearance

The Havashire dog is a small breed who stands up to 12 inches in height. While they can vary in appearance due to what parent genes have influenced their makeup the most, they generally are an attractive ball of fluff. Their body is often longer than it is in height, and the legs are short and sturdy with paws that look like they are wearing fluffy slippers due to the longer hair around the feet. The head is gently rounded on top, and they have a medium muzzle with teeth meeting in a scissors bite. Blessed with an expressive face complete with dark round eyes and a small black nose, ears that are floppy and with whiskers around the muzzle - this short and lively dog  is irresistible to many new owners.

Havashire Breed Maintenance

The Havashire dogs grooming needs can vary depending on the coat it inherits from its parents. If they have the longer coat it will require brushing almost every day to keep it from matting or tangling. A professional groomer may be needed just to trim it up to make care a lot easier, but it depends on the area you live in. Country dogs will need more trimming ( and brushing)  due to the interaction of the dog in the long growth of the countryside. Your Havashire only needs a bath when it is needed, otherwise you can dry out her skin. Ensure you use a mild dog shampoo designed to protect the natural oils of your dogs coat. Her fluffy ears can trap dirt and debris so wipe them out gently with a damp cloth and dry carefully. Finish the maintenance with a nail trim and teeth brushing to keep her looking and feeling her best.

Havaneses and Yorkshire Terriers often suffer from heart murmurs, cataracts, and patellar luxation. Secure pet health insurance today to avoid high veterinary care costs. Havashire Temperament

The Havashire dog is a peoples dog, they will want to be with you day and night. If they are left alone for long periods of time they may end up depressed and develop destructive behavior. They are a true companion dog and with their comical nature and bright personality, they will brighten anyone's day. They can be hard to train as they have a willful side which requires patience and a calm attitude as these little dogs are sensitive to voice tone. Experienced owners suit them best as they will try to dominate and boss you around. The Havashire dog has a ton of energy and requires a good daily walk to burn it off.  A visit to the dog park will help socialise your dog, and they will enjoy the free time to run and play in a secure area. These dogs rarely bark but are very alert. They will let you know if someone is around, but are not aggressive. The Havashire dog is ideal for apartment living as they are small, quiet dogs. They are ideal pets for a family as they get on well with other dogs and cats, and they adore children who will fuss over them.

Havashire Activity Requirements

Full of energy, nosy, curious and alert, the Havashire dog has more than her share of energy for a dog of her small stature. A daily walk is essential to burn some of that energy off, although she will get a lot of exercise just moving around the home, going from one person to another. She loves going out and about around town, and will soak in all the attention she will get. The pet park is ideal to let her run and race the larger dogs and will guarantee a tired pet at night. Games with the family that involve chasing a ball or seeking hidden objects will keep them busy for hours, so if you have a small secure yard it will be ideal. After all the daily activity, they will happily curl up on your lap for a cuddle and a much needed rest.

Our havashire has been a great addition to our family, she's so loving and protecting. She is also very smart, she learns tricks quickly and was easy to potty train. If she's by herself, she'll go on the pad. If she's with family, we've trained her to ring a bell when she wants to go outside.
