Pekingese

Pominese
The Peek-A-Pom is a hybrid breed. His parents are the Pekingese and the Pomeranian. He is a hypoallergenic breed who sheds only minimally. However, he will require regular grooming in order to keep his coat looking healthy. He is fairly easy to train, although it may take a little longer to fully train him compared to other breeds. Persistence and patience are key in working with the Peek-A-Pom. He is not an overly active dog, and he is not prone to separation anxiety. However, the Peek-A-Pom may not be good for families with small children due to his small size. If the Peek-A-Pom is allowed to "grow up" with the children, however, they learn how to handle the Peek-A-Pom and enjoy his companionship as much as his older family members.

Peek-A-Pom Breed History

The Peek-A-Pom is a fairly popular breed; however, little is known about the origins of the hybrid breed. In order to learn more about the Peek-A-Pom, one should look at the history of the parent breeds. The Pekingese is said to be the descendant of a marmoset (monkey) and a lion who fell in love. The lion asked Buddha to make him smaller so that he could marry his love, but to allow him to retain his courage and power. Buddha granted the lions request, and the pair produced a pair of dogs known as Fu Lin dogs. These dogs would be the favorites of the Empress. During the Opium Wars of the 1800s, British soldiers stormed the imperial palace, where they found several of the Pekingese dogs. They took the dogs home to England, where they became favorites of British nobility as well. Queen Victoria owned a Pekingese, who was a favorite among her many dogs. Although experts do not know exactly how the Pekingese was brought to the United States, we do know that the first Pekingese was registered by the American Kennel Club in 1906. It remains a popular breed today. The Pomeranian is related to the ancient Spitz breeds of the northern countries. It hails from the province of Pomerania. Poms have always been a popular breed. Notables such as Martin Luther, Issac Newton, Michelangelo, and Mozart are all said to have owned Pomeranians. Queen Victoria highly favored the breed as well. She is thought to be responsible for helping to breed the dog to the small size it is today. (At one time, Poms weighed about thirty pounds.) The Pomeranian was first registered in the United States in 1909. By the 1950s, the breed was one of the most popular in the United States, and today, it ranks fourteenth out of 155 AKC-registered breeds.

Peek-A-Pom Breed Appearance

The Peek-A-Pom will be a very small dog. While he is quite small, he is a strong, sturdy dog. His ears will be erect with possible feathering. His eyes can be described as "button" eyes. His muzzle will be black and may or may not be short (this will depend on the dominant parent breed). He will have a fluffy tail with a great deal of feathering. Colors will be varied. He may be a light tan, cream colored, or he may be a tri-color. He may also be rather red. Some Peek-A-Poms may be brindle, black, or brown in color as well. Occasionally, a Peek-A-Pom will be black and tan. He will generally have longer hair that is silky and fine.

Peek-A-Pom Breed Maintenance

The Peek-A-Pom will require a moderate amount of maintenance. He will need to be brushed daily in order to keep his coat looking healthy and clean. Bathe him only when necessary. Some owners do this every six to eight weeks at the groomer's. Should you have to bathe him at home, remember that his skin can be sensitive. Use all-natural shampoos that will not dry out his skin. Brush his teeth two or three times a week to prevent tartar build-up and bad breath. However, if you want to prevent tooth decay - which is prevalent in smaller dogs - brush his teeth daily. Trim his nails every two to three weeks unless they tend to naturally wear away.

Peek-A-Pom Temperament

The Peek-A-Pom is a happy, alert little dog. He is highly affectionate. He loves all members of the family, and rarely does he meet a stranger that he can't make friends with. He loves to play, and toys which stimulate mentally activity are highly recommended for the Peek-A-Pom. This breed also does well with children although they are better recommended for families with older children simply because of the size of the Peek-A-Pom. (Often younger children do not know how to handle a small dog, and while the child means no harm, the dog may nip a small child who squeezes too tight or pulls the dog's fur). The Peek-A-Pom will do anything to make his family laugh. He is not prone to separation anxiety, and is not overly destructive provided he has ample exercise throughout the day.

Peek-A-Pom Activity Requirements

The Peek-A-Pom needs a moderate amount of activity each day. Short, brisk walks throughout the day provide adequate amounts of exercise for the Peek-A-Pom. Also, you'll love taking this little guy to the dog park. He loves to play with other dogs and other people alike. However, one should remember that the Peek-A-Pom may inherit a brachycephalic snout. If so, he will need to have adequate water nearby during play time. Also, he should never be allowed to get overheated or over-exerted. The Peek-A-Pom will be happy in an apartment or a home with a fenced-in area. Should you live in an apartment, remember to keep toys that will stimulate his little mind handy and take him for short walks around the neighborhood. If you put him in an enclosed area to play, always supervise him for overheating.

maya is so extremely sweet. LOVES being touched, extremely friendly. she loves giving kisses. keeps herself super clean. only downsides that maya has is, lots of barking, really hard to train, separation anxiety, and fears of riding in cars and big crowds. none of those gives us too much problems though. she’s extremely smart otherwise and we all love her with all our hearts:))

The most wonderful dog in the world. So different. He is black and white. People have mistaken him for a little bear, bat, monkey, you name it. Always pleasant. Cataracts and a little slower these days but he will be 15 in June!

My little baby was adopted 13 years ago from the shelter that said he’s a Pekingese mix but looks very Pomeranian. He was 16 lbs at his heaviest. Absolutely the best dog you can imagine. So sweet and affectionate, got attention and pets wherever he went, beautiful fine soft fur that rarely shed. Super clean and extremely intelligent. He suffered from a luxated lens at age of 12, patellar luxation soon after but kept on going like a puppy until arthritis set in at around 16. He got monthly joint injections until passing away of a stroke last week. There will never be another BonBon.
