The Silkshire Terrier is a cross between the popular Yorkshire Terrier and the Silky Terrier. Like their parent breeds, Silkshire Terriers are small in stature. Standing at about 10 inches and weighing under 10 pounds, these tiny Terriers pack a lot of personality into a small package. They have long, fine single coats that are blue and tan, black and tan or blue and red in color, and they require extensive grooming. Silkshire Terriers belong to the toy group, and they make wonderful companions. Because their exercise needs are minimal, they are excellent pets for apartment dwellers.

Silkshire Terrier Breed History

Much of history of the Silkshire Terrier is unknown, but the breeds that make up this lovable companion are well-known. First recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885, the Yorkshire Terrier, or Yorkie, was originally bred in England in the 1800s to hunt small rodents. Named for the city in which it was developed, the Yorkshire Terrier was likely bred from a mixture of other Terriers, including the Skye Terrier, Manchester Terrier, Dandie Dinmont and Paisley Terrier, and the Maltese. Today, this breed is most often kept as a companion. Modern Yorkshire Terriers are much smaller than their ancestors, and they commonly accompany their owners in bags and purses. They are a fashionable breed and can often be seen sporting trendy hair bows and other accessories. The Silky Terrier originated in Australia in the late 1800s and early 1900s. This breed was created by mixing the Australian Terrier with the Yorkshire Terrier. While bred as companion animals, they remain true to their Terrier roots and are also excellent hunters of snakes and vermin. This breed was not officially recognized by the American Kennel Club until 1959 In fact, in 1996, a Silky Terrier was awarded the Australian Purple Cross of Bravery after protecting its young owner from a venomous brown snake. Unfortunately, it is unknown when the Silkshire Terrier was developed or why. The breed has become increasingly popular as a companion animal, though, and is recognized by the Dog Registry of America. and the International Designer Canine Registry.

Silkshire Terrier Breed Appearance

The Silkshire Terrier is a small, lightweight dog with a long, silky coat that is more like human hair than typical dog hair. Typically weighing less than 10 pounds, these compact canines have small, wedge-shaped heads. Their eyes are brown and almond-shaped, and their ears are erect and pointed. The tail is medium-length and may or may not be docked. The most distinctive feature of a Silkshire Terrier’s appearance is its coat, which is long, fine and silky. It is usually darker on the back and neck and lighter on the face and from the elbow area down. Coat colors vary and include black and tan, blue and tan and blue and red.

Silkshire Terrier Breed Maintenance

Both the Yorkshire Terrier and Silky Terrier are hypoallergenic, resulting is a hybrid that is also ideal for allergy sufferers. Because Silkshire Terriers have hair as opposed to the typical dog fur, they shed very little. Their long hair does require significant maintenance. This breed needs to be brushed daily to prevent tangling. Because their coat is more similar to human hair than the coats of most other breeds, these dogs also require more frequent bathing. The coat should be kept at approximately 6 inches long, and it should not touch the floor. Some Silkshire Terriers need to be trimmed about twice each year. Their hair should be kept out of their eyes, either by putting it in a top-knot or by having it trimmed. Their ears must be cleaned regularly to remove excess was and other debris. Their teeth should also be brushed regularly, and their nails should be kept neatly trimmed.

Silkshire Terrier Temperament

Though small in stature, Silkshire Terriers are big in personality. They are intelligent, energetic, alert dogs that do well in a variety of situations. Silkshire Terriers tend to get along best with older children who understand how to properly handle such a small breed. They can be snippy with younger kids, and many do not get along well with other animals. This breed is well-known for being extremely devoted companions, and they are excellent watchdogs. They tend to be quite vocal, which may be problematic for those who live in apartments. These dogs are intelligent and respond well to patient, consistent training. However, they are often difficult to housetrain.

Silkshire Terrier Activity Requirements

The Silky Terrier and Yorkshire Terrier are both energetic breeds. Because of their small size, though, they tire out quickly and do not require large areas to play. A short walk or a quick game in the back yard will be more than enough to sufficiently wear your Silkshire Terrier out. Because their exercise needs are limited, these dogs do well in urban areas, including in apartments and homes with small back yards. When outdoors, especially in rural areas, they should be watched to ensure that they do not fall victim to larger animals. Because they are intelligent, Silkshire Terriers also benefit from mental exercise.

An Ex NBA all star player gave my mom as a gift a puppy from his pack of Yorkshire terriers. My mom named him Rebel as the player attended UNLV. My mom called Rebel her little gentlemen. MY Mom promised to find him a wife she wanted his puppy. But how and where? My mom gave me a ride and while waiting watched a man with what she thought was a Yorkie enter a smoke shop. When he exited she approached and asked if female and not fixed. Missy was a year old Silky and her humane was a sweetheart with the same mindset! On 6/10/10 Missy had 3 one passed one male ours Ringo the other female Tiny.I held Ringo in my palm, I would not see him again for over a year as I was working on a concert tour. My mom & I had a female rescue puppy half shitzu & ? and Rebel and now his son Ringo. When I returned I could not help loving up the 2 I knew. Ringo did not respect the pecking order and would growl at the two if I pet them until they left. Then he would take there spot. At first it was off putting, then it was kinda funny then I fell in love with it. I think they really are companion dogs. Rebel was loyal to my mom in her bed at end of day. I also held Ringo the day he was born. Ringo is devoted and is bat shit crazy in love with me. Ringo has max personality & enough intelligence to be a service dog. When my mom passed in 2013 and I did not want to get out of bed father and son would badger me even pulling duvet off me and bed until i got up and fed and walked them. Sadly at the age of 18 and a little over a year ago Rebel my mom's little gent passed away. Ringo is now an only child that my girl and I treat like he's our son. Ringo can be a pain in the ass especially when it comes to daily routines like eating going for a walk must be at the same time everyday if not becomes vocal & badgers you into capitulating. My girl and I want a puppy out of him we don't know how to stud him out. I really think the Silkshire is a genius and a perfect hybrid of both breeds that is underrated and unknown by most! I'm sure everyone on hear who shared would agree with me!

My Silkshire is loyal and is happiest when he is within 1-2 feet of me. He is sturdy and strong. He never quite relaxes and is always " on duty " He is my best friend and I could get by without me. He prefers to sit next to me rather than on my lap.

Izzy is so sweet and NOT a Barker. She's friendly although timid with doors, railings and crowds. Loves routine: mealtime, snack time, walks, bedtime. Her coat is gorgeous har, beautiful coloring and doesn't shed.my 15 yr old Dorkie died recently and she has been such a comfort. She goes to work with me and is perfectly behaved. She asks to go out by jumping around but uses potty pads when I'm not home or I don't get her 'message '.I'm very blessed to have been given this dog!

We have had Quinton since he was 12 weeks old. He has made us laugh and brought so much joy to our lives. His training was easy, we had to older miniature poodles and he just followed them to go potty. We have a fenced in yard so he’s king outside. Our poodles have passed on but we now have cats. Quinton loves the first cat that we got 2 years after getting him. The cat even cleans him from time to time. It’s like they are brothers.

She was quite a handful when she was younger. About five she chilled out. Coco wants pets when she wants them. Everything is on her schedule and she is very vocal about it. Specifically treats. When she was younger I trained her to do all sorts of tricks. She tore her acl a few years ago so I backed off on some of those. She's is a good dog most of the time. She cries a lot but that's my fault for giving her what she wants. She is very smart and loves to hunt lizards. She is my first dog and my spirit animal.
