Not much is currently known on the Malton, which may be due in part to their mixed bloodlines between three different purebred dogs. However, since the Maltese parent makes up most of the Malton, many owners can rely on their dog having more Maltese traits. The Maltese is an ancient companion dog and also the predecessor of the Bichon Frise. The Maltese is from Malta but developed in England as it is known today. The small companion dog came was a favorite in English and French courts. The English variations of the Maltese are the surviving lines, and all Maltese dogs can trace their lineage back to the English varieties. The Maltese are one of the most popular of the Toy breeds, and the American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1888. The Cavachon has Bichon in its bloodline, and the Bichon Frise is a close relative of the Maltese, having split from the Maltese many years ago. The modern-day Bichon developed in the French courts as a lady's dog and was popular for many years before being replaced by Pugs and French Bulldogs. Eventually, the Bichon Frise became a common dog and fell out of favor in royal courts. Interested waned and threatened the Bichon until the 20th Century, when several breeders worldwide attempted the restore the world's dog breeds. The Bichon Frise was among the lucky canines who had its bloodlines restored, and the American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1972. The second parent of the Cavachon is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The small dog was a royal favorite among the English court, having gained its name from King Charles the I and II in the 17th Century. However, the favor did not last long as Pugs moved into royal hearts. Many Cavaliers were crossbred with Pugs select the desires round heads and flat faces of the mini-Mastiffs. Luckily, some Cavalier fanciers, who were not so cavalier with their love of this breed, took the restoration to its former 17th Century standards so seriously that the club refused entry into the American Kennel Club when solicited. However, a secondary club championed the application, and the AKC recognized the Cavalier in 1995.
