American Foxhound Dog Names

The American Foxhound is native to America and originated originally from Virginia, in the 1700s.  This breed is often referred to as being the 'George Washington Dog.' George Washington was a breeder himself as he loved to have his dog accompany him on the hunt. They are recognized as being part of the Hound group of dogs by the American Kennel Club. The club recognized this breed as early as 1886 and describe the American Foxhound as being sweet-tempered, easy going and independent.  They have a fantastic temperament and are said to be great with children, as well as other dogs. They are extremely athletic, in fact sources suggest that they were born to run, so grab your sneakers. 

In popular culture, the most famous American Foxhound is likely to be Old Drum.  Old Drum is famous because of his murder in 1869, at the hand of his owner’s neighbor.  Old Drum’s owner, Charles Burden, successfully sued his neighbor (and brother-in-law) for the death of his beloved Foxhound, after his neighbor shot Old Drum, following a threat earlier that day to shoot any stray that entered his land. He blamed the loss of many sheep on stray dogs.  Attorney, and later Senator George Vest, is famous for leading the case, and more so for his closing argument, Eulogy to a Dog, in which he stressed the loss felt by the owner following the death of his ‘best friend’.  Sources suggest that the case of Old Drum was actually the inspiration for the phrase ‘Man’s best friend’ which is a well-known phrase today when referring to the relationship between owner and dog.

The case of Old Drum was significant as Vest won this case and Old Drum’s owner was compensated $50 for damages.  A bronze statue of Old Drum, inspired by Vest’s closing statement, stands today outside of the courthouse in Warrensburg, Missouri.  The story is so significant that there is also a bust of Old Drum in Jefferson City, Missouri, residing in the Missouri Supreme Court building.

The story of Old Drum and his bond with his owner is symbolic of just how loyal and loving the American Foxhound breed is.  It is still remembered today, as this was the first time that a case of this nature had been fought and won in court. In 1936, a movie was released named The Voice of Bugle Ann, and this is based on the story of Old Drum and the court case that followed his death.
