Dog Names Meaning Cunning

If your pooch indeed exhibits cunning behavior, then you might want to consider a name that denotes their actions. How about the famous cartoon character Wile E. Coyote who spent his time trying to outsmart the infamous Roadrunner?

The name Wile E. Coyote is a play on the word 'wily.' For over 70 years, the cunning desert canine relative has been focused on outsmarting his nemesis the Roadrunner. The duo of characters both star in the Merrie Melodies and the Looney Tunes cartoons adapted by Warner Brothers. The animated characters were first created in 1948 by the great animation director Chuck Jones and writer Michael Maltese. The characters were inspired by Mark Twain and his book, 'Roughing It.' 

Wile is driven by his instincts to chase and try to capture the Roadrunner, but instead of hunting like a wild canine he instead thinks of himself as an advanced genius who uses various gadgets and inventions to catch the fast bird. However, despite his elaborate schemes, he continuously fails. 

Spinoffs of the classic cartoon hit have taken place with Wile similarly chasing Bugs Bunny. When pursuing Bugs Bunny, Wile speaks in a very refined manner that showcases his intelligence. After each failed attempt to catch the fast bird, the audience starts to feel sorry for the coyote. 

In the cartoons, Wile E. Coyote often turns to a mail order company called the Acme Corporation to order gadgets to snare the Roadrunner. It is revealed in later episodes that the coyote is an employee of the company. In later chapters, Wile E. Coyote files a lawsuit against the Acme Corporation for faulty mechanics. The Roadrunner even testifies on behalf of the Coyote. Unfortunately, Wile loses the lawsuit. 

The popularity of the Roadrunner cartoons cannot be overlooked. For years, children would wake up early on Saturday mornings just to watch the hilarious show. Spinoffs also occurred, and cartoon books emerged. The Wile E. Coyote even undertook several guest appearances on Family Guy and Seth MacFarlane's Cavalcade of Cartoon. 

Songs have even been created about the Coyote such as, "Coyote," which was written by guitarist Mark Knopfler. A 2002 album called The Ragpicker's Dream was also made about the iconic Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote. Even though the cartoon was created decades ago, it still appeals to children and adults of all ages. Everyone likes tuning in and hoping that maybe one day the coyote will be cunning enough to catch the Roadrunner.
