Dog Names Meaning Dream

The most famous dog coming from the dreamland of Oz, Toto, is described as a small, black dog, with small eyes, and a tiny nose. It is believed that he is either a Yorkshire Terrier or a Cairn Terrier, but that does not mean that Toto’s heart was as small as his body! He is, in fact, quite a brave dog, who accompanied Dorothy to the magical land of Oz and took part in many adventures she had while there.

In the books, Toto is described as a playful pup who could always put a smile on Dorothy’s face, even on the poor farm in Kansas they lived on. He is Dorothy’s best friend, some may even call him her only friend, so it is no wonder that he was the one who actually led to Dorothy discovering the most exciting chunk of her life. So, what happened?

One day a storm hit Kansas, particularly the farm where Dorothy lived. The tornado was so strong that it actually lifted the whole house and took Dorothy and Toto all the way to the dreamland of Oz. In Oz, Dorothy was told to follow the Yellow Brick Road, and Toto, being her best friend and companion, followed her along this journey. As they walked along the road, they met Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion, and Tin Woodman. At first, Toto was suspicious of them, just trying to protect Dorothy, however, after the adventures they had, he came to like them and became good friends with them as well.

In the famous 1939 movie adaptation, The Wizard of Oz, Toto was played by a Cairn Terrier called Terry, who was a bit of a movie star. She appeared in sixteen films, such as Bright Eyes with Shirley Temple, and for her role as Toto, she was getting $125 per week, which was more than most humans at the time! Later on, due to her immense popularity, her name was officially changed to Toto, and nowadays she has a memorial at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

The name Toto is mostly associated with our hero, a small dog who had an incredible opportunity to visit a dreamland. And isn’t he a lucky dog? To have his owner feature him in her wildest dreams, to partake in dreamlike adventures, and to visit the places no dog has visited before – not many dogs could brag about that!
