Dougal, the tawny mastiff in the book, “Little Lord Fauntleroy” is an older example of this type of name, while Doc, the dog that originally belonged to Meredith Grey in the popular television drama "Grey’s Anatomy", but was later adopted by the characters Addison Forbes Montgomery and Derek Shepherd, is a much more recent example. "Oswald the Lucky Rabbit" had a Dachshund named Doxie back in the 1930's, the street-smart Jack Russell Terrier in "Oliver & Company" goes by the moniker Dodger, and Dougal the animated dog was a key character in the stop-motion animation children’s television show “The Magic Roundabout” between 1964 and 1971. A movie by the same name was released in England in 2005, and then in America in 2006 under the name of "Doogal". The movie centers on the character of Dougal and the adventures he shares with his friends Zebedee the jack-in-the-box, Brian the snail, Ermintrude the cow, and Dylan the rabbit, but unfortunately did not gain support from either viewers or critics.

Another dog with a name starting with the letters "d" and "o" that became famous, or more accurately, infamous, was an Airedale in 1921 named Dormie, who was accused of murdering fourteen cats. While most dogs would end up euthanized or in the pound for this type of offense Dormie somehow found himself in a San Fransisco courtroom, with a lawyer, trying his case in front of a jury of his peers. The owner of the wayward terrier was Eaton McMillan, a well-to-do car salesman, and when the owner of one of the cats who had been dispatched by the animal insisted that the dog be put down, McMillan balked, bringing the case to the attention of the California Justice System. The court case was a spectacle, with several dogs from their neighborhood being paraded through the courtroom to prove the accuser’s ability to recognize the specific dog and the defense even called another Airedale Terrier, Rowdy, to the stand due to his close relationship to a Persian cat named Mary Ann. Rowdy was brought to the stand to be questioned as a character witness during the trial to show that Airedales do not have an instinctive grudge against cats. Although the fact that only Dormie was escorted by a police officer, caused the accuser’s identification of him to be moot, Dormie was eventually cleared of charges due to the fact that his dog license was up-to-date, at the time giving the dog freedom to roam the neighborhood, whereas unlicensed animals such as a cats did not have that freedom.
