Over two decades ago a little dog named Herbert, a name shared with presidential Leo Herbert Hoover, fell overboard while traveling through the French Pass in New Zealand, a treacherous stretch of water known for its whirlpools. By the time the men driving the boat realized that the pooch had fallen overboard, there was no way to turn back, at least not until morning. When the seafarers gave the dog’s young owner, Tim, the news he insisted that his dog was still alive. He, his father, and several of the seafaring men went back in the morning to look for the little canine, despite the odds. After many hours of searching and at least thirty hours after the little dog had tumbled into the water, the searchers found Herbert, still swimming, and retrieved him from the water. In 2008, a children’s book, written and illustrated by Robyn Belton, was published detailing his adventure.

In November of that same year, an Australian Cattledog by the name of Sophie Tucker fell overboard off the coast of nearby Queensland. When she was first spotted by locals of the mostly uninhabited island they thought that she was a malnourished wild dog, she was skinny, dirty, and wouldn’t let anyone touch her. Several weeks later locals noticed that the once starving canine had started filling out, around the same time that baby goat carcasses started being found around the island and rangers were called in to capture the predator around April. Friends of the couple had heard the story about the wild dog causing havoc on the island and mentioned it to the couple, prompting the Griffiths to call the rangers. The rangers that had captured the canine ferried it from the island to the mainland, and the couple was astonished when their long-lost pooch tore out of the cage and straight into their arms, alive and well.
