Being on the streets of Lebanon as a pup takes some survival skills. A stray dog in Beirut, Lebanon was shot at close range. Fortunately, the pup, named Luke, was flown to Massachusetts where it was able to have reconstructive surgery. Luke, who is two years old, was rescued from the streets by Animals Lebanon volunteers and brought to Sweet Paws Rescue in Groveland. The rescue group looked for advice from veterinarians in the area about how to best go about repairing the facial damage that Luke received. Dr. Mike Pavletic, who is the Head of surgery at the MSPCA’s Angell Animal Medical Center, led the surgery in an effort to give Luke a second chance. According to Dr. Pavletic, it appeared that Luke was shot at close range with ammunition like that of buckshot. The surgery was a success and the damage to Luke’s face was repaired, allowing him to breathe and eat in comfort.
Another dog that resides in Lebanon is Risco, who is not your average German Shepherd dog. Risco is the type of dog that you expect to see in movies, on billboards or on the labels of dog food. Riscoe is the offspring of a line of champions to include his father, grandfather, and kids. The pup is ranked at the top in the dogs of the world and best male dog in the Middle East, North Africa, and Eastern Europe. Earning that ranking is the result of the breed’s genetics and the breed’s purity. Sisco likes with another German Shepherd named Art, as well as a Chihuahua named Toot. Risco is five and a half years old and weighs 40 kilograms. For the last three years, Risco has won awards at prestigious competitions in Germany and Holland. At these competitions, around 300 dogs are involved in the competition, seeking the title of excellent dog or (VA) dog. Of those that participate, around 10-12 dogs are voted VA dogs. In 2015 Risco was VA 12. In 2016 Risco earned VA 6 and in 2017 Riscoe earned VA 1. Risco plays like a puppy when not training, however, once trained the German Shepherd can be extremely focused and also ferocious.
