Louisiana Dog Names

Louis is a common dog name, and some owners use the variations "Louie" or "Lou." One dog who drew quite a following was owned by Brad Nowell, the original singer of the rock group Sublime. Over time, the Dalmatian became a sort of mascot for the group. His name was featured in many song lyrics, and Louie (also nicknamed "Lou Dog") would often join the group on stage. (Louie would eventually become deaf from his many stage appearances.) Louie graced several Sublime album covers. At one point in the early 1990s, Louie was lost for about a week. This event inspired Sublime to cover "The Day That Lassie Went to the Moon;" however, they changed the title of the cover to "Lou Dog went to the Moon." Brad Nowell had rescued Louie, in a sense - Nowell bought the dog from a man who routinely left Louie tied in his front yard. Nowell saved up $500 to purchase Louie. 

Many friends of the band tell stories of the Dalmatian biting them - even biting celebrities such as Gwen Stefani; however, friends of the band relate that Lou Dog was really protecting them. Louie did not like skateboards - many think Lou Dog realized that skateboarding could be dangerous - and would often run alongside his owner and nip at him as he skated. 

Louie seemed to be everywhere that his owner went. This means he was often backstage,  and he attended practices, video shoots, and, of course, concerts. When Brad Nowell passed away in 1996, Lou Dog was at the foot of his bed. Although he outlived his owner, Louie was well cared for until he died in 2001.  

Another famous Louis is a Beagle named Lou featured in the 2000 movie Cats and Dogs. Known as Lou in the film, he is a main character. Heading the D.O.G. HQ, Lou is reminiscent of James Bond. He is known for his love of adventure.
