Introduction

Mulan is the lead character and is also the namesake of a 1994 Disney film which was critically acclaimed. Set during the time of the Huns, Mulan volunteers to join her father's army to keep him from going to war. Although her offer is refused, she secretly takes on the armor of a man in order to take her father's place in the army (his failing health is a concern to Mulan). Although Mulan's true identity is eventually exposed, she still manages to save the day when she spies Hun warriors on their way to kidnap the Emperor. She earns the respect of her people by foiling the kidnapping and eventually wins the heart of Shang, one of her fellow soldiers.

Little Brother

What better dog to spotlight than Mulan's pet, Little Brother? Little Brother is an animated dog; he does not appear to be any particular breed. He provides companionship to Mulan, but he also pulls his weight around the house. He is physically described as overall cream-colored; he has some brown markings on his back and tail. (These markings appear to be in a saddle pattern.) His personality is friendly and playful; however, when Mulan needs help, Little Brother is happy to pitch in! He loves to have a good time, but Little Brother never shies away from any work that Mulan asks of him.

Little Brother made his initial appearance in Mulan. He also plays a role in Mulan II, and he makes a cameo appearance in the 1999 film Tarzan. Little Brother enjoys bones, having fun, and helping Mulan as she completes chores around the Fa home. In fact, Little Brother's stated goal in life is to assist Mulan. His chief dislike is Shan Yu, who is also an enemy of Mulan's.

Little Brother won the hearts of audience members by assisting Mulan with her chores in his own awkward way. He made a point of interrupting the prayers of Mulan's father, Fa Zhou. Little Brother joins the family party at the end of the original Mulan. Little Brother makes his presence known in Mulan II as well. In the second installation of the series, Little Brother aggravates the little girls as they train and learn to fight.

Little Brother is only the third dog to be owned by a Disney princess and featured in a film. Mulan refers to the dog often as her brother. Some believe this is a reference to the story Ballad of Mulan. It is possible that Mulan thinks of the dog as her "adoptive" brother.

Interestingly enough, there is a Marvel character sporting the moniker "Dog Brother #1." This character also originates in the Orient, and he is reminiscent of an ancient warrior. Dog Brother is known for defending the weak, both human and canine. He employs a pack of brave dogs who assist him in his endeavors. This "good guy" appears briefly in the Marvel Comics. He has no known on-screen roles.

Mulan Inspired Dog Name Considerations

When one considers dog breeds that are suitable for a name inspired by the Disney classic Mulan, several factors can contribute to the list. First, Mulan is set in China. This would lead one to believe that dogs originating in China would be fitting of a Mulan inspired name. The Chinese Crested, the Shar-Pei, and the Chow Chow are all breeds common in America today; however, each of these breeds originated in the Orient.

Next, several types of small, "lap-dog" type dog breeds originate in China. Placing a Mulan inspired (or any China related moniker) on these pups is quite fitting. The Pekingese, the Japanese Chin and the Shih Tzu all have origins in China. In fact, the Shih Tzu was actually kept by the Empress of China. Legend has it that the pups were trained to sit on their hind quarters and "wave" to the Empress as she entered their chambers (that's right; the Shih Tzu had their own palace, and the Empress would go visit the dogs at her leisure). There are some other less common breeds which originate in the Orient, but are just as suitable for a Mulan inspired name. These breeds include the Tibetan Mastiff, the Chongqing dog, and the Kunming Wolfdog.
