Slovakian Hound Dog Names

The Slovakian Hound is not a well-known breed within the United States and there are only a handful of breeders in North America; however, they advertise their Slovakian Hounds under their other name, Slovensky Kopov because the American Kennel Club (AKC) has accepted the breed under this name into their Foundation Stock Service (FSS). Breeders are diligently working to get the breed fully recognized by the AKC. Breeders in Europe are facing the same trials as those in the United States and Canada. Spod Kunovej kennels of Slovakia has been promoting the Slovakian Hound since 1960. One of their beautiful Slovakian Hounds, Umattu, has been involved in conformation shows and hunting trials since puppyhood. Umattu, or more formally Umattu spod Kunovej was born May 16, 2012 and was named Best Junior Slovakian Hound in 2013. He also has earned a number of CAJC certificates which are awarded only to those dogs who conform to the breed standard and are considered to have excellent conformation. Umattu also competed in several field or work trials and has scored high in trial a number of times, even as a young dog.

Stefan and Jozef Matta of Spod Kunovej kennels are a father and son team. They began their hunting kennel with German Shorthaired Pointers, Dachshunds, Jagdterriers, and Alpine Dachsbracke. However, it was not until they discovered the Slovakian Hound in 1960 that the true love affair began. Their first Slovakian Hound was purchased from Koloman Slimak. Their first Slovakian Hound was a female who loved to hunt. Unfortunately, she had such a high prey drive that she would get out of her enclosure and kill several chickens in their village. The other villagers were not happy and the Mattas had to place this female with another breeder who did not live within a village. The next Slovakian Hound that they purchased was a male that became their foundation sire for their breeding program. With guidance from Slimak until his retirement; the Mattas have produced 30 Slovakian Hounds that have obtained their breeding qualifications. In Slovenia, a dog must pass several tests before they are given the appropriate paperwork to be able to be bred. The Slovakian Hound must be deemed to have the correct conformation, temperament, and hunting abilities as laid out in the breed standard. In total, the Matta estimates there have been a total of 160 Slovakian Hound puppies born at their kennel. The majority of these puppies are placed in hunting homes or pet homes, not used for breeding purposes.
