Stabyhoun Dog Names

Being one of the rarest breeds in the world, it is truly amazing to find anything written about a particular Stabyhoun; especially one that resides in the United States. Judy Wiltsek of Mill Spring, North Carolina is one of those lucky enough to have a Stabyhoun as a part of her family. Her family looked through the Dog Breed Encyclopedia and soon Wiltsek, husband Michael and daughter Lauren fell in love with the spotted dog from Friesland. It is estimated that there are only 6,000 Stabyhouns globally. Wiltsek is a small animal veterinarian and a dog trainer and she is also an advocate of the Stabyhoun breed. There are only about 300 Stabyhoun dogs in North America. Because the numbers are so low, Wiltsek is committed to increasing number of Stabyhouns. She searched across North American, closely examining pedigrees, virtues and faults of Dutch imports and American bred dogs trying to find a suitable mate for her female Stabyhoun named Suffie. Wiltsek is comfortable travelling to the Netherlands and visiting with breeders over there and she has even imported puppies into the United States. Her first Stabyhoun was imported about ten years ago and Wiltsek has called this breed one of the most emotionally intelligent dogs she has ever known. While it is possible to find a Dutch bred Stabyhoun and import either the dog or the dog’s semen, Wiltsek preferred to find a dog where she could travel and bring Suffie along to meet him. There have only been a handful of litters born in North America since 2006 and Wiltsek hopes that Suffie will add to the number of purebred Stabyhouns in North America.

Wiltsek joined the Ameri-Can Stabyhoun Association or ASA which is a closely monitored breeding program with the goal of establishing a genetically versatile and healthy population of Stabyhouns. Since its inception in 2006 the ASA has registered about four litters per year across North America. The Stabyhoun is not recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC), but Wiltsek has become the AKC representative for the breed. It will take committed breeders like Wiltsek to keep the breed genetically sound and growing. The Wiltsek family owns three Stabyhouns. They have Taz, Suffie and Skyla. Taz is from the very first litter born in the United States. Three year old Suffie and two year old Skyla were both imported from the Netherlands. Before the ASA could approve Suffie for breeding, she had to be fully assessed by a Stabyhound specialty judge and be given a clean bill of health.
