Unique Dog Names

It all began in the Ikingi Maryut area of Egypt, in 1941. Horrie the Wog Dog met Private Jim Moody when he was only a puppy. The intelligent and easily trained puppy soon won over the battalion, whom all agreed he should be allowed to join them on their journey. Employed as an air sentry, Horrie actually had a major task: to alert troops to approaching enemy aircraft. He did so well in his task that he got promoted to the rank of corporal, and during the evacuation of Greece, he was actually aboard the troopship Costa Rica when it was sunk.

The good news is that Horrie refused to go down without a fight. He survived, swimming up to the surface and getting rescued by his battalion. He later made it to Crete, where he was wounded by a bomb blast. Still, the dog survived and made it to Syria as part of the Allied garrison. 

It's no wonder that when it was finally time to head back home to Australia, Private Jim Moody couldn't bear to part with Horrie the Wog Dog. Due to quarantine laws that prevented war dogs to become rehabilitated and lead normal lives thereafter, Moody decided to smuggle the pooch. He used a canvas bag, reinforced with wooden slats so that the dog could breathe, and he smuggled the dog successfully in 1942.

No wonder he became the subject of a book by author Ion Idriess in 1945. The issue is that due to the publicity of the book, Private Jim Moody's secret saw the light of day. He was promptly ordered by officials to give the dog up. Horrie was to be put down.

To this day, no one knows what happened. Some say the dog was put down in March of 1945, but others swear Jim Moody swapped Horrie out with another dog from the pound, and that Horrie lived out the rest of his natural life in Corryong, in rural Victoria.

Whatever you choose to believe, know that Horrie will forever live on. He has his own exhibit in Washington D.C.'s famous Smithsonian museum, alongside the remnants and curiousities of days long gone by.
